In an exclusive interview, Dr. Emmanuelle Waubant tells HollywoodLife.com what symptoms of the new polio-like virus parents and doctors should be looking for in patients. We also learn new details — including that adults may be at risk as well.
The new polio-like illness that everyone is talking about is a unique and rare virus. So how do you know what to look for? Dr. Emmanuelle Waubant talks exclusively to HollywoodLife.com about symptoms, testing, and more.
Doctor Says — Look For These Symptoms To Identify Polio-Like Virus
Many parents have questions after hearing about the polio-like illness that is paralyzing children in California. So far five cases are confirmed, while at least twenty other cases have been identified. HollywoodLife.com spoke to Dr. Emmanuelle Waubant, a neurologist at the University of California working on the case study, to get you answers.
When asked what symptoms patients exhibited, Dr. Waubant told HollywoodLife.com: “Paralysis in at least one limb. No numbness, no tingling, no other neurological problems. Patients were initially thought to have inflammation in their spinal cord.”
And if you’re wondering if the children who have been affected were vaccinated, the answer is yes: they were.
“We made sure that patients had been vaccinated and that they had a normal immune reaction to vaccines, which meant they were protected from polio,” she explained during our interview.
Adults May Also Be At Risk
Even though all of the confirmed cases are children, Dr. Waubant says that it is definitely possible for adults to be affected as well.
“Our cases have all been children but other cases across the country have been presented and some of them may be adults. We have not seen the cases ourselves, so we cannot confirm.”
Thankfully, despite reports, Dr. Waubant also assured us that this virus has “no chance” of being genetic.
“At this point the main message is that although we are all taking this very seriously, we have not seen much change since the first case. It may seem concerning to parents to hear that children can be affected by this disease, but they should not panic. In the very remote scenario that a child should experience paralysis they should take them to their physician immediately.”
