In 2012, Mayim Bialik received a load of flack for publicly breastfeeding her then 3-year-old son while riding on the subway in New York City. Now the vegan mom is speaking up to defend mothers who are shamed for breastfeeding in public.
Would you be offended if a woman started breastfeeding her toddler in front of you in a public area? Mayim Bialik found out the hard way that most people will turn it into a huge controversy — especially if you’re a well-known celebrity. While promoting her new vegan cookbook, Mayim took an opportunity to defend her decision along with other women who publicly breastfeed.
Mayim Bialik Defends Mothers Who Breastfeed In Public
The Big Bang Theory actress Mayim, 38, is the proud single mother of two boys — Miles, 7, and Fred, 4 — and she is not afraid to discuss her choice to follow the attachment parenting route. While promoting her cookbook “Mayim’s Vegan Table,” the actress took the time to discuss the controversial moment she was sighted breastfeeding her son Fred on the subway nearly two years ago.
“What I like to point out is that was the best way for that subway ride to be pleasant for everyone. It was the end of a very long day,” Mayim explained during her recent HuffPost Live interview. “That was not a weak moment of parenting but a conscious decision of, ‘I have the best way to make this child happy and content right now.'”
Mayim Reminds Us — Breastfeeding Is Not Sexual
Mayim is happy to stand up for moms everywhere who breastfeed their children, and seems pretty peeved to find that so many people are against it. In fact, she raised some valid points on the subject during her interview:
“When I was nursing, I didn’t feel the need to be immodest, but I also feel like that’s going to vary from woman to woman. I would try to be absolutely respectful and conscious of the community I was in. But I don’t believe you need to cover up a baby eating anymore than you need to cover a baby drinking a bottle.”
