Olympic legacy skier Lyman Currier faced a tragic end to his Sochi games on Feb. 18, as the 19-year-old fell and injured his knee on the difficult halfpipe course.
Lyman Currier — the son of former Olympian David Currier, who competed in the 1972 Games — had high hopes going into the big debut of the Olympic halfpipe skiing event on Feb. 18, but snowy, treacherous conditions led to a potentially serious injury.
Olympic Skier Lyman Currier Crashes During Halfpipe
God, this is horrible. When someone trains 24/7 for a moment as huge as this, you can’t help but feel for them when they crash and burn. Of course, the giant snowflakes that inhibited the halfpipe event contributed to Lyman’s second-run crash in the qualifying round, but that doesn’t make his painful scream any less haunting.
At first it looked like Lyman — who had only just recovered from a 2012 knee surgery to repair a torn ACL — only experienced a minor crash. However, when the Boulder native crumbled to the ground and screamed in pain over a twisted knee, it became clear that his injury was much more serious than what met the eye. Medical workers rushed up the halfpipe to help him, but Lyman soon managed to stand and skied straight back down the pipe and off the course. The cameras caught his sobs as he exited the course, and found his father in the crowd.
“It popped,” he cried, before collapsing in his father’s arms.
All in all, the whole thing was pretty heartbreaking to watch, and HollywoodLife.com sends thoughts to Lyman and wishes him a swift recovery so that he can come back better than ever for the 2018 games.
David Wise Wins Olympic Halfpipe Event
Of course, not everyone had a day like Lyman’s. Fellow U.S. skier David Wise won gold in the skiing halfpipe finals, expertly navigating the difficult course to score an impressive 92 on his first run, which proved to be plenty enough for the gold despite a nasty fall during his second run. This brought the U.S.A.’s medal count up to 20, as the team has thus far won at least one medal every day.
