American Idol revealed this season’s top 30 finalists Feb. 13 — or, at least, it revealed most of the top 30. There’s still one major decision left to be made, and unfortunately, the judges are too indecisive to make it on their own. Neco Starr and Ben Briley, both of whom really impressed us in their initial auditions and during Hollywood Week, are neck and neck, and HollywoodLife.com thinks the final spot should go to Neco!
Neco Starr Vs. Ben Briley — Why Neco Deserves A Spot In The Top 30
Let’s begin with Neco’s audition, shall we? I’m a firm believer that no one should be allowed to perform Adele on a singing competition show, as few people can even dream of matching the Grammy winner’s powerhouse vocals, but Neco’s rendition of “Someone Like You” absolutely blew me away. Not only did he hit all the right notes, but he sang with incredible inflection, and I loved the R&B spin he put on it. It felt like he was really putting his own spin on it, versus the typical karaoke fare we’re used to seeing during auditions.
Truth be told, we were also pretty blown away by Ben’s audition. He has a down-home, soulful voice far beyond his year, and his performance of Amos Lee‘s “Arms Of A Woman” was not to be forgotten. Unfortunately, it just didn’t quite leave the impact that Neco’s did. I feel like Ben might be a better fit for The Voice, where I believe he would flourish — but on Idol, I fear he’s destined to become lost in the crowd of talent.
Now that we’ve established Neco as the better vocalist, let’s talk about image. Phillip Phillips aside, Idol hasn’t had the best track record with its recent winners — few people remember who or what Crystal Bowersox is — so some natural star quality couldn’t hurt this season, and Neco has that in spades. Ben is cute and relatable, but that doesn’t seem to be working for Idol anymore, and if it hopes to stay relevant in the ever-changing landscape of singing competition shows, it needs a Neco.
