It’s the last ‘American Idol’ episode before the live show, and in a surprising twist, the Top 30 is actually the Top 29 — until America decides between Neco Starr and Ben Briley!
We’ve made it, you guys. American Idol auditions are finally over and the semi-finalists for the live shows have been chosen! Mostly. The judges made some really thoughtful choices and we think we’ve got a pretty solid group — but we’re still missing our 30th! The judges couldn’t decide between Ben Briley and Neco Starr, leaving their fate up to America. See below for all the highlights and our finalists so far!
‘American Idol’ Recap: Feb. 13 Highlights — Top 29 Revealed
We left off last night, Feb. 12, with Casey Thrasher and CJ Harris singing off against each other for a spot in the Top 30. The cliffhanger was for naught, as they both made it through. Weak.
Marrialle Sellars may have given us the most emotional acceptance of the week — when the judges put her through, she told them that she “forgot to breathe” and then she told Jennifer Lopez that she smelled good! Legitimately glad to learn that information here at HollywoodLife.com.
Caleb Johnson has been a favorite of ours and it’s great to see him being given a second chance after being cut in Season 11. Also, he sang “Radioactive” as his last-ditch effort the night before hitting the interview room — and you know how much we love a good cover of that song. However, Harry Connick Jr. was concerned about Caleb’s relevance in the competition and called him a “character,” like someone from Rock Of Ages. Oops. Not a flattering comparison. However, he made it in! Here’s hoping he gets a makeover that will befit his amazing vocals!
We love Ethan Harris and his young, shy sort of confidence. After all, he sang a Keith Urban song for his initial audition! That takes guts. We’re happy to see him in the semi-finals! He’s pretty adorable.
Fifteen-year-old Briston Maroney may be young but his voice is suuuper interesting and we can’t wait to hear more from him. Harry told him a story from his youth, of how his father wouldn’t let him go to New York, and how Harry is soo frustrated that the talented young Briston will get to live his dreams earlier than Harry did! I dunno, Harry, you seemed to do pretty well for yourself. Don’t be bratty.
Kenzie Hall started just absolutely sobbing almost as soon as she got into the room — and the judges had only mainly positive things to say about her! They didn’t even string her along for a torturously long time as they like to do with most contestants who make it in. But we’re huge Kenzie fans — you do you, girl; we’d be crying, too.
Another huge favorite of ours, 17-year-old Austin Wolfe, was pitted against Sandie Lee — a talented girl we simply haven’t seen much of — for the last female spot in the semi-finals. We’re not too surprised to see Austin take it — she’s made a huge impression on the judges and on viewers! All the best to Sandie but we’re really happy that Austin made it.
Lastly, we were left with Ben Briley and Neco Starr battling it out for the last spot. We’re not wild about Ben, but we saw a short clip of Neco singing “Halo,” and is there anything better than a guy covering a Beyonce song? Nope. In a surprising twist, it’s left up to America to decide on their fate! Let’s be real — if Neco doesn’t get it, we will be crazy surprised. Head on over to AmericanIdol.com to vote!
