‘Good Luck Charlie’ star Desi Lydic ‘couldn’t be more proud’ that she is playing a mom in same-sex relationship on the Disney Channel show, and applauded Disney for featuring a new family unit!

Desi Lydic received both negative feedback and overwhelming support from fans of Good Luck Charlie when she starred as a mom in a same-sex couple for an episode of the popular Disney Channel hit show. She spoke out on Twitter to explain she is ‘so proud’ to be included in the show’s first-ever gay couple role, and raved “Go Disney!” for their forward-thinking move.

Disney Channel Introduces First Same-Sex Couple On ‘Good Luck Charlie’

Disney made a major leap forward by diversifying their programming to include family scenarios that would be more relatable to young children who have same-sex parents.

“This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors,” a spokesperson for the Disney Channel said in June 2013, when the show’s casting was announced. “Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.”
