Madonna & Macklemore’s Emotional 2014 Grammys Performance

Mon, January 27, 2014 12:01am EDT by 26 Comments

The most emotional performance of the night belonged to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis with Mary Lambert, with a surprise appearance by Queen Latifah and even the Queen of Pop herself!

The 56th Annual Grammy Awards continued its tradition of putting the world’s favorite artists together onstage, and our favorite performance this year definitely belonged to Macklemore and Mary Lambert along with surprise performer Madonna. Their performance lit up the stage at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif. on Jan. 26. and was made all the more special with Queen Latifah joining them onstage in an interlude where she officiated 33 marriages, many same-sex!

Macklemore, Mary Lambert, And Madonna’s Haunting 2014 Grammys Performance Of ‘Same Love’

Madonna has been an icon for equality for decades, so it’s no surprise that the stunning 55-year-old teamed up with up-and-comer Macklemore and his producer Ryan Lewis for a haunting rendition of their gay rights anthem “Same Love,” along with Mary Lambert, who sings the absolutely gorgeous chorus.

Jay-Z Grabs Beyonce’s Butt

Macklemore’s performance of “Same Love” began with him rapping, gesticulating wildly, emotionally, putting everything he had into the song. When it was Mary’s turn to sing the chorus, she could not have been more on-point. Her voice was clear and on-key, and she looked beautiful in a red-sequined dress with a bold red lip.

Macklemore grew increasingly passionate as his Grammys audience did, and when he sang “no freedom ’til we’re equal, damn right I support it” he received roaring applause. As the song neared its end, you could see that Macklemore was feeding off of the audience’s support and applause; he was smiling as the song neared its end — but maybe that was because he knew what was coming!

Queen Latifah Officiates 33 Marriages At The 56th Annual Grammy Awards

Queen Latifah came back onstage after introducing the performance to officiate 33 marriages — mostly for same-sex couples! It was incredibly emotional. Thirty-three smiling couples exchanged rings in front of the Staples Center audience — and the world — as Queen Latifah pronounced them married!

The surprises kept coming — just when we thought that Madonna would not show up after all, she appeared from backstage in an all-white outfit singing her 1986 hit single, “Open Your Heart.” Mary joined her, and then the two ended the performance with a mash-up of the “Same Love” chorus and “Open Your Heart.”

The end of the performance was received with a thundering, standing ovation.

What did you think of this incredible performance, HollywoodLifers? Was it your favorite performance of the night? Do you think that “Same Love” should have won for Song Of The Year? What did you think of Queen Latifah officiating 33 marriages on live TV? Were you moved? Tell us all your thoughts below!

Having laid the above foundation about love, and as we are about to approach Christmas 2005, I would like all readers to know that love is not just the giving of presents that people will forget within a short period nor the emotional or sexual attachment to one-another.

Before signing off, I would like to share with you the recipe for love. A recipe is a list of ingredients and directions for making a particular dish. A good chef needs a good recipe and hours of preparation to make that Christmas turkey taste good and edible. The Christmas pudding requires ‘real effort’ in preparation and feeding regularly with liquor. Likewise, love has an ingredient to which I want to share some of it with you all, and the sole purpose of enriching your love-life.

It truly was a great moment. Although Madonna was obviously still hurting from her recent accident, she pulled through and did this for a great cause. The ignorant responses on this page really should take a step back and see 1. Just how much Madonna has influenced current artists. 2. She truly is an icon (like it or not) and she deserves all the respect. Try putting your hate aside and look at the BIG picture. This performance wasn’t about how old Madonna is or how she sounded. It was about how we should “strip away the fear” and stand together against hate.

the performance up to Madge’s appearance was amazing… Once madge opened her mouth to sing flat and off key a bit, it was not as sweet. She should have back tracked it or lips it out right. There is something to be said about knowing your own limits and working within them. It hurt to hear her attempt to half sing one of her biggest hits, and kinda insulting to the those exchanging rings.

To those that believe Madge can do no wrong, sorry. All great things come to an end.

Having stated all that, lets give it up for Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, Marry Lambert and alls that got married in front of the world. Hip Hip Hurray.

Profound and heartfelt performance. All contributors made this a success and finally an icon to model to kids we are all the same, we should be treated equally and love is a birth right! I wept when Madonna sang open your heart and the couples began to feel the magnitude of this historical ceremony. The greater lesson in all of this is simply, “Don’t Hate!” The times are changing and to have artist’s step forward and bring everybody together during one song…
In my humble opinion, that far exceeds any Grammy award!

Yes. She hurt her leg and was on crutches until a few days ago. From the glazed eyes I would guess it was pretty painful and she was on medication.

You’re probably not gonna look this good when you’re 55… So I would try to make some friends now before you look like beef jerky!!

Same Love performance was beautiful! Performers and couples involved really sent a great message and those who disagree have got to be in a world of their own!

Poor Madonna did not even get the courtesy of an introduction! I loved her performance and how she is always gracious with the spotlight.. Whats up with Lorde winning all those awards for a picture perfect imitation of Adele?
