Seattle Seahawks fullback Derrick Coleman inspired fans of all ages when he starred in a Duracell commercial that chronicled his life growing up deaf. After seeing the clip, NFL fan Riley Kovalcik, 9, wrote him a letter to tell him he was her ‘inspiration,’ and Derrick responded with an even more powerful message.
Derrick Coleman, a deaf fullback for the Seattle Seahawks, was in a Duracell battery commercial that went viral and inspired many people — hearing impaired or not — around the world. One particular person however, was inspired so by the commercial: Riley Kovalcik. The girl, 9, who wears hearing aides herself, wrote Derrick a letter that will touch your heart, and sparked a greater conversation about their empowering story! See their letters, here.
Derrick Coleman Letter To 9-Year-Old — Deaf Seahawks Player Writes To Deaf Fan
A nine-year-old deaf girl was one of millions to come away inspired from Derrick’s commercial. Riley Kovalcik sent Derrick an inspirational letter after she and her identical sister Erin, who is also deaf, watched the commercial.
“Dear, my inspiration Derrick Coleman,” Riley started the letter, which her dad posted to Twitter. “I know how you feel. I also have hearing aids. Just try your best.”

She went on to wish Derrick luck in the Seahawks’ NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers and then told Derrick what they had in common. “I wear two hearing aids. I love sports. Other things are I’m an identical twin and [she] wears one hearing aid too!” she wrote. What a sweet girl!
Derrick Coleman Responds To Fan’s Letter With More Words Of Inspiration
Derrick was deeply moved by Riley’s letter and responded with an inspirational letter of his own. The fullback posted the letter on Twitter, explaining to Riley and her sister that there is indeed hope for them even with their special conditions.

Derick wrote to Riley: “I want you to know that I always try my best in everything I do and I have faith in you & your twin sister too. Though we wear hearing aids, we can still accomplish our goals & dreams!”.
Derrick even told Riley that he hoped they could meet and play sports and games together!
The Seattle Seahawks will play in Superbowl XLVIII on Feb. 2, against the Denver Broncos. Regardless of the outcome of the game, we know that Derrick will be playing his hardest for deaf people all around the world, including Riley.
