A nine-year-old deaf girl was one of millions to come away inspired from Derrick’s commercial. Riley Kovalcik sent Derrick an inspirational letter after she and her identical sister Erin, who is also deaf, watched the commercial.

“Dear, my inspiration Derrick Coleman,” Riley started the letter, which her dad posted to Twitter. “I know how you feel. I also have hearing aids. Just try your best.”

She went on to wish Derrick luck in the Seahawks’ NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers and then told Derrick what they had in common. “I wear two hearing aids. I love sports. Other things are I’m an identical twin and [she] wears one hearing aid too!” she wrote. What a sweet girl!

The Seattle Seahawks will play in Superbowl XLVIII on Feb. 2, against the Denver Broncos. Regardless of the outcome of the game, we know that Derrick will be playing his hardest for deaf people all around the world, including Riley.

Hearing impaired is not the correct use to refer to those who have lost or less hearing. They are referred to as deaf or Deaf.
