Just days after Monica and her ex-husband were brutally gunned down in an attempted robbery, Venezuelan authorities announced on Jan. 9 that seven suspects have been identified and arrested. However, four more suspects remain on the loose.
There’s finally been a break in the Monica Spear murder case. After the former Miss Venezuela and her ex-husband, Thomas Henry Barry, were killed — and her 5-year-old daughter suffered a gunshot wound — on Jan. 6 on a highway in Venezuela, police were able to find evidence and subsequently arrest a gang of seven people.
Seven Arrested In Monica Spear Homicide
Police found Monica’s camera inside the home of one of the seven suspects, the head of Venezuela’s national crime investigation agency announced on Jan. 9, according to CNN. The found evidence allowed authorities to identify and arrest six additional suspects — though four more reportedly remain on the loose.
No one has been charged yet, and no names have been released, but authorities seem sure that there is evidence to link this group — who are suspected gang members — to the double homicide.
Venezuela President On Monica Spear: ‘It’s Time To React’
Because of Monica’s status as a former beauty queen, and her more recent stint as a soap opera star, the murder case has become extremely high-profile, which has galvanized the Venezuelan public to amplify pressure on the government to act on the country’s high crime rates and rampant violence. But it at least appears that the government has responded.
“It’s terrible that this happened,” Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro said at a security meeting on Jan. 8. “It is not time to faint, to throw in the towel, to let our guard down. To the contrary, it’s time to react.”
The fact that a group of suspects have been identified — and that several have already been arrested — is a huge step in the right direction towards bringing justice to Monica’s killers. Hopefully this progress is a sign of momentum, and all those responsible will be detained in the coming days.
