So sad. The Venezuelan telenovela star and beauty queen and her ex-husband were shot and killed in an attempted robbery late on the night of Jan. 6, according to police. The couple’s 5-year-old daughter was wounded by a bullet in the leg, but she is expected to be okay.
Monica Spear, 29, her ex-husband, Thomas Henry Berry, 39, and their daughter Maya, 5, were driving on a highway in Venezuela when the actress’ car crashed. The couple were waiting for a tow truck to arrive when they were killed by unknown assailants, according to police and local news reports.
Monica Spear Dead — Former Miss Venezuela & Ex-Husband Killed During Robbery
This is all so tragic. Monica and her family were visiting her native land for the holidays, and they were headed to the city of Valencia in a grey 2002 Corolla Toyota when they were attacked. The murders took place near Puerto Cabello, Venezuela’s main port, according to the Associated Press.
The couple’s daughter Maya was in stable condition after being caught in the crossfire, prosecutors said in a statement.
Monica, who was named Miss Venezuela in 2004, had been living in Miami with her family before her death and had been planning to return to the U.S. this week.
The former beauty queen was an actress on six Spanish language soap operas on Telemundo, including “Pasion Prohibida” and “Flor Salvaje.”
Monica Spear Left Venezuela Because She Felt ‘Insecure’ There
The late Venezuelan beauty previously confessed in an interview that she left her native country because she felt unsafe there, according to Huffpost Voces. And it’s no wonder why — Venezuela has one of the highest murder rates in the world and violent crime there has been on the rise in recent years. There were more than 24,000 homicides in the nation in 2013 alone, according to nbcmiami.com.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Monica and Thomas’ 5-year-old daughter and the rest of their families during this difficult time.
