Madonna sparked major controversy while on vacation in Switzerland on New Year’s Eve when she posted a pic of her 13-year-old son, Rocco Ritchie, holding a bottle of gin. The photo, captioned, “The party has just begun! Bring it! 2014,” lead to serious backlash from her millions of followers — who found the photo to be a tasteless joke.

Madonna and her four children spent their New Year’s Eve skiing in the Swiss Alps, where the legal drinking age is 16. Many fans of the singer were outraged, going so far as to say she is a “terrible parent” and “underage drinking is never a joke.”
Madonna later responded to such comments with another Instagram pic on Jan. 5 with the caption, “No one was drinking we were just having fun! Calm down and get a sense of humor! Don’t start the year off with judgement!”
Madonna Receives Messages of Support From Fans
Many of Madonna’s fans came to her support, too. “Where is your sense of humor guys… Chill out,” one user commented. Others have responded to the controversy with more comical remarks. “They better be in bed before 11 pm!”
Even Rocco had something to say about his mom’s parenting. Rocco Ritchie appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show in Oct. 2012, and told the talk show host that Madonna is actually a “strict mom.” Watch the clip here!
