Daniel was a much-beloved figure on the popular Disney show, which ran from 2001-2004. Escobar reprised his role as the enigmatic theater teacher Mr. Escobar in The Lizzie McGuire Movie, which was released in 2003. Jake Thomas, who played Lizzie’s little brother Matt on the show, tweeted his condolences on Dec. 17:

In addition to Lizzie, Daniel also appeared on the shows How I Met Your Mother, Weeds, Desperate Housewives, Two and a Half Men, Charmed, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dharma & Greg, and NYPD Blue, among others, and in the popular 2001 movie Blow as Emilio Ochoa. The trained Shakespearean actor won a Helen Hayes Award in 2008 for his role in the Woolly Mammoth Theater Company’s production of David Greenspan‘s She Stoops to Comedy.
