So courageous! Susan, the Scottish singing star who was first discovered on ‘Britain’s Got Talent,’ revealed that she has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism, after being told she had brain damage as a child.

Susan Boyle, 52, is known for her beautiful voice and uplifting rise to fame. In a new interview, she inspires her fans even more by sharing that she was bullied by other children when she was young, because of learning difficulties — that she now knows to be Asperger’s syndrome.

Susan Boyle Diagnosed With Asperger’s Syndrome

“It was the wrong diagnosis when I was a kid,” Susan told The Guardian on Dec. 7. “I was told I had brain damage. I always knew it was an unfair label. Now I have a clearer understanding of what’s wrong and I feel relieved and a bit more relaxed about myself.”

She went to seek her own diagnosis from a Scottish specialist about a year ago even though nobody told her to, and was told she has Asperger’s syndrome.

“I thought I had a more serious illness and couldn’t function properly. I was told my IQ was above average,” she says.

Asperger’s syndrome is a form of autism that mostly affects social and communication skills.

“I am not strong on my own,” Susan stated. “When I have the support of people around me I am fine. I have a great team.”

Susan Boyle: Asperger’s Syndrome Will ‘Not’ Affect Her Life

“You don’t fight without some resentment,” she says, reflecting on schoolmates teasing her when she was a child.

She also claims that her diagnosis will not confine her abilities. “It will not make any difference to my life. It’s just a condition that I have to live with and work through.” She also hopes that sharing this part of her life will make others more empathetic to her and Asperger’s syndrome in general.

“I think people will treat me better because they will have a much greater understanding of who I am and why I do the things I do,” she says.

The singer released her fourth album, Home for Christmas, on Oct. 25.

Susan is so brave to reveal her diagnosis, and is such an inspiration to us. Is she an inspiration to YOU, HollywoodLifers? Let us know!
