So tragic! A 15-year-old student was shot near West Orange High School in Winter Garden, Florida, and the suspected gunman, a 17-year-old student, was taken into police custody
Jerodrick Smith, 15, was taken to the hospital after being shot on West Orange High School‘s campus. Police responded to an emergency call to the school at around 1:15 p.m. in Winter Garden, Fla. on Dec. 4. Authorities found suspected gunman, 17-year-old Jamorian Eddie Patrick Bell, who reportedly fled through the school’s property after the shooting, hours later nearly four miles from the school.
West Orange High School Shooting: Teen Student Shot, Gunman In Custody
The shooting was said to have occurred “after a fight broke out between students near the bus loop as the school day came to an end,” a West Orange High School student told the Orlando Sentinel, but law enforcement has not confirmed a fight or other motive.
The shooting victim, later identified as Jerodick Smith, was alert when he was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center for care, Orange County Public Schools spokeswoman Kathy Marsh said.
Florida High School On Lockdown Following Shooting
“Our school is now on lockdown,” the school’s principal, Douglas Szcinski, wrote on the school’s Facebook page about an hour after the shooting incident. “We are following all safety procedures and precautions. There has been an incident in which one student was shot. … Law enforcement is on the scene working the situation.”
The shooting happened after classes on an early dismissal day, according to Click Orlando. Students were being taken out on school buses, but any students who were not picked up were transferred to nearby Ocoee High School, according to Principal Szcinski’s Facebook post.
