University Of New Haven Gunman On Campus, Suspect In Custody

Students at the University of New Haven were told to seek ‘Shelter In Place’ around 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 3 after a gunman was reported to be on campus.

Police have detained one suspect following a report that a man was carrying what appeared to be a rifle on the University of New Haven’s campus in West Haven, Conn. The whole campus was advised to stay indoors because a “building by building search” is still taking place, according to the university’s Facebook page. Keep reading for more details. 

University Of New Haven Students Told To Seek ‘Shelter In Place’

Around 12:30 p.m., the university tweeted a report of an Asian male gunman near the South Campus:

At 2:50 p.m., the university posted an update on their Facebook page saying that one suspect is in custody and weapons have been recovered:

UPDATE: Police are currently conducting a building by building search of the UNH campus. One suspect is in custody and weapons have been recovered. There is no indication of additional suspects at this time. Police are conducting these searches to ensure all areas are safe. For everyone’s safety, shelter-in-place remains in effect due to a large police presence on campus. Your cooperation with this order is important to ensure your safety.

Nearby Public Schools Seeking ‘Shelter In Place’ Because Of Gunman

The University of New Haven enrolls about 6,400 students. The majority of its 4,600 undergraduates live in university housing. Several nearby public schools also put out shelter in place orders as a precaution, according to the AP.

Yale University in nearby New Haven, Conn., was locked down for close to six hours on Nov. 25 after a man anonymously called police on a payphone near the campus and said somebody was coming to “shoot up the school.”
