Grey skies ahead at ‘Good Morning America’ — the show’s beloved weather anchor Sam Champion is leaving! Sam announced on Dec. 2 that he’s leaving his ABC family after 25 years, to become the new face of The Weather Channel.

The millions of Americans who have gotten used to hearing their morning weather report from Sam Champion might have to switch networks, or risk stepping out in the rain without an umbrella. The Good Morning America vet announced Dec. 2 that he’s leaving his beloved home for an impressive gig at The Weather Channel. Read below for more details!

Sam Champion Leaving ‘GMA’ For A ‘Once In A Lifetime Opportunity’

Sam has been a beloved weatherman at ABC since 1988, so news of his departure has sent shockwaves through the GMA community. ABC News President Ben Sherwood sent out an official release on Dec. 2, saying:

“Our friend and colleague Sam Champion is leaving ABC News for a new opportunity at the Weather Channel.  He will become the on-air face of the network, appearing as a host and serving as managing editor. Sam calls it a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Sam’s final jaunt on GMA will air on Dec. 4, and it will surely be an emotional broadcast. Sam himself took to Twitter to communicate directly with his fans, letting them know that he is forever grateful for his time at ABC. “Only an amazing opportunity like this at @weatherchannel cld take me away from my @ABC family of 25 yrs and @GMA #blessedlife,” Sam tweeted.

Sam Champion: His ABC Legacy

Sam’s good nature and unending dedication to his job make this a huge loss for ABC, but Sherwood was classy and congratulative in his farewell release.

“Over the years at GMA, Sam has broadcast more than 1,800 weather forecasts,” Sherwood continues.  “He has traveled to almost every major weather event in the U.S. As many of you know, Sam’s “Go” bag is always ready and his stellar reporting during Superstorm Sandy contributed to ABC’s Peabody Award for coverage of that historic storm…While there is no replacing Sam, we are in excellent hands with his storm chasing partner of the last few years, meteorologist Ginger Zee, who will take over his weather responsibilities at GMA and across ABC News.”

HollywoodLife wishes Sam the best of luck in his new adventure!

NO, I like to get my weather info from Sam. ABC needs to offer him a raise that will entice him to stay. Good chemistry between Sam and the others. I never watch the weather channel. Bummer

I haven’t read anywhere that only positive comments are welcomed.
I wouldn’t lower myself to use your vile language but if AMC really thought that Sam was invaluable it would have matched the offer from The Weather Channel.

This website would not be worth reading at all if only one side of a discussion is published.

The positive side for you, Jean, is that you haven’t really lost Sam.
You can start to watch The Weather Channel!

Sam doesn’t have the monopoly on Weather Reports. They are all pretty similar.
