The ‘Hunger Games’ actress may be Hollywood’s favorite fun-loving star, but she reveals in a new interview that her outgoing demeanor didn’t come naturally at school — and had to be medicated for anxiety issues.
Jennifer Lawrence is a natural actress — and admitted that when she was younger, acting classes were better for her anxiety issues than therapy! Keep reading to see what J-Law said regarding her passion.
Jennifer Lawrence Reveals She Was Medicated Due To Anxiety Issues
Jennifer told Madame Figaro magazine that she took medication to help ease her social anxiety growing up.
“My nickname was “Nitro” as nitroglycerin. I was hyperactive, curious about everything. When my mother told me about my childhood, she always told me there was like a light in me, a spark that inspired me constantly. When I entered the school, the light went out,” Jennifer revealed.
That’s so surprising to hear, since Jen has a bold personality and plays the fierce Katniss Everdeen so flawlessly! What caused her issues in the first place?
“We never knew what it was, a kind of social anxiety. But I had friends. I especially think I do not feel smart because I was not good enough student. I think some people are stupid, but eventually get out and I was one of those,” she said. Jen transitioned right into acting seamlessly, though — because acting classes were better therapy to her than a doctor’s office!
Jennifer Lawrence Reveals How Therapy Didn’t Help Her Anxiety Issues
“I went to see a shrink, nothing worked. One day, I begged my parents to take me to a casting, we went to New York and that’s where I started acting. Just on stage, my mother saw the change that was taking place in me. She saw my anxieties disappear. She found her daughter, the one who had this light and joy before school,” Jen told the magazine.
Sounds like acting is Jen’s true passion and gift — which isn’t shocking, since she already has an Academy Award under her belt at the age of 23!
“I finally found a way, open the door to a universe that I understood, that was good for me and made me happy, because I felt capable, whereas before I felt worthless,” she said.
