The ‘Teen Mom’ star now speaks out about teen pregnancy prevention — but she is the first to admit she was uninformed herself about the many birth control options out there. In a new interview, Maci said she now sees that birth control doesn’t have to be complicated or embarrassing!
Maci Bookout‘s life was forever changed when her now 5-year-old son Bentley was born, and though she wouldn’t trade her experiences with him for the world, she does wish she had been more informed about her birth control options when she was a teen. Maci revealed in a poignant interview that she never realized how uncomplicated it can be to get proper sex education and birth control.
Maci Bookout Birth Control: ‘Teen Mom’ Star Speaks Out For Better Sex Ed
“I remember having sex ed once in high school, and it was centered around STDs and AIDS and HIV. The only birth control we were taught about was condoms, which is great, but there’s still a risk of pregnancy,” Maci told Cosmopolitan.
“I wish I could have known that I could just go to the health department by myself and get birth control for free,” Maci said. “I thought you had to go to the doctor and tell him you were having sex — when literally there’s a city health department two miles down the street from my house. I could have walked in and said, ‘Hey, I need to go on birth control.'”
Maci Bookout Speaks Out For Birth Control
Maci realizes that talking about birth control is controversial — but she still wants to add her story to the larger discussion. “There are some opinions out there that birth control is bad or it makes you slutty,” Maci told Cosmopolitan. “That’s one reason I try to be so open about it. Who you’re having sex with and how many people you’re having sex with is no one’s business but yours. Being on birth control doesn’t mean anything except that you are smart!”
“It’s a bit ridiculous how we can let these judgments flying around impact real decisions, when in all honesty, all we need to be thinking about is protecting ourselves,” Maci asserted.”
