New Zealand songstress Lorde has already established herself as pop music’s newest cool chick, but she may feel some blowback from fans of her chart rival Miley Cyrus after an interview with the UK’s ‘Q Magazine.’ Both ladies have expressed their mutual admiration via Twitter, but Lorde let it slip that she wasn’t exactly a fan of Miley’s controversial VMA performance.
Miley Cyrus, 20, has come under fire for the overt sexuality that saturates all of her performances, and it’s probably a good thing that Lorde hasn’t followed suit — after all, the ridiculously talented singer is only 16. But now she just might have to learn the hard way that saying anything about a fellow pop diva is bound to ignite a public “rivalry” rumor that will literally follow you forever. (Just ask Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.)
Lorde: Pop is ‘Scarily Powerful’
While Lorde is a self-proclaimed Miley fan, she wasn’t necessarily in love with the twerk-happy Robin Thicke performance that captivated public interest in Sept 2013. When asked about the sexually exploitative nature of pop, she responded, “I’m a feminist, so certain things about music I find frustrating. I think pop is scarily powerful.”
Sounds pretty harmless. But as she continued, it became clear that Lorde’s disdainful sentiments were directed towards the Robin/Miley duet which will live in infamy.
“There are a lot of shock tactics these days,” she said. “People trying to outdo each other, which will probably culminate in two people f***ing on stage at the Grammys. I try to keep my blinkers on and focus on making music.”
Good plan, Lorde.
Lorde and Miley: Still friends?
Even though Lorde critiqued Miley’s most famous act — something Miley should be used to by now — we have a hunch that the two up-and-coming pop divas will kiss and make up. After all, once you declare that you like something on Twitter, you can never take it back.
