Although the temperature is starting to drop it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your style in the colder weather! Find out which looks are so in for the season and SHOP our picks if you want to update your wardrobe.
Leave your basic black coat at home and get creative in a new silhouette or style! The first big trend we are seeing in outerwear this winter is interesting silhouettes, with oversized coats and cocoon coats dominating the runways for Fall 2013. While the roomy style is certainly in, it wasn’t the only trend we spotted. If you prefer a more defined look, opt for a belted wrap coat or a structured military jackets. With so many versatile styles, there’s easily something for everyone this season.
Coats For Women:
For oversized coats, or sometimes cocoon coats, the colors are relatively simple and muted, so the attention is on the large shape of the coat. One of our favorite oversized jackets is DKNY’s Mixed Media Asymmetrical Coat. Its sumptuous wool and zipper details are perfect for someone looking to wear the drape-y look with an edge.
Wrap coats will definitely be a hit this winter, as they define the waist and rid any worries of looking too bulky. This type of jacket is also great for layering colorful turtlenecks, interesting scarves, or another textual garment underneath for added style. One of our go to wrap coats this season is H&M’s Short Coat-and it’s a steal at under $50! Something about this silhouette reminds us Miss Olivia Pope — and we love it.
Those looking for something with more structure should look to the military-inspired silhouettes. This coat will emphasize your shoulders and make you look powerful and confident this season. These coats typically come with interesting details and embellishments, like fun zippers and cool buttons. One of our favorites this season is Vince Camuto’s Wool Military Jacket. The zippers and high collar are everything we want in a coat, and it’s black color will make you look slim even if you’re wearing a bulky sweater underneath.
Another popular trend we are seeing for cold weather is the toggle coat. This classic look will take you practically everywhere, especially if you find it in the perfect shade of camel like Juicy Couture’s Wool Short Swing Coat. This kind of coat is best during the day, but can be carried into the evening with a pair of platform wedge booties. We love this kind of jacket as it gives a ‘cool’ factor to any ensemble. If you really love the look but want something a bit more dressed up, than we recommend opting for a longer toggle coat.
Mix it up this winter with patterns:
For those looking to have a little fun with their outerwear, you should look to coats with patterns on them. Whether it be stripes, plaids, voiles, or interesting embroideries, nothing makes a statement quite like a printed coat. Just make sure the colors stay neutral to avoid any color clashing with your outfit underneath. Our go-to patterned coat this season is Club Monaco’s Irina Striped Coat. Its so clean and modern and it can easily take you through the chilly first days of spring, too!
