Its the avant-garde challenge! The designers use insects as their inspiration for this experimental challenge. Keep reading for our recap and find out who went home!
The designers hit the ground running this week by meeting host Alyssa Milano at the American Museum of Natural History. Alyssa tells them they are going to use the museum’s new poisonous insect exhibit as inspiration for their looks. And they will use real live bugs to realize their designs. And to inspire them to go above and beyond creatively, this week is the avant-garde challenge!
‘Project Runway All Stars’ Season 3 Episode 2 Recap:
Since Elena won the challenge last week she gets to pick her bug first. She finds an interesting grasshopper and is super excited about her design. The other designers rush to pick their own insects, all ranging from various worms to beetles. Its not long before they head to Mood for their fabrics. Almost all the designers struggle with finding their perfect fabrics. In the process, Elena looses her sketch and of course freaks out as a result.
They finally arrive at their workspace at Parsons, having worked in the aisles at Mood last week. The designers have a newfound appreciation for the separate sewing room and spacious work tables. They immediately get to work on their creations — they only get 10 hours, after all! Their mentor Zana Roberts-Rossi comes in to check on their progress and delivers some serious criticism to several of the designers. Her critiques are so intense, both Mychael and Melissa decide to totally start over! Meanwhile, Elena is slowly breaking down having lost her design idea; she wanders around her workspace crying and screaming — what a mess! Let’s hope she gets it together before the show!
This week’s guest judges are Project Runway Season 9 winner Anya Ayoung-Chee and jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer. Alyssa reminds the designers that they are looking for a garment that breaks the boundaries of fashion and references their chosen insect. Every look that comes down the runway is extremely different from the last — we wonder which looks the judges love/hate the most!
This week’s top three are Mychael, Elena, and Irina. Mychael’s dress was well received by all the judges, with Isaac Mizrahi saying, “it looked couture.” Elena’s dress was a surprise considering her final two hours of working were spent running around sobbing, but it was definitely an interesting design that referenced her grasshopper. And Irina’s dramatic black gown was undisputedly a show stopper.
This week’s bottom three were Melissa, Daniel, and Jeffrey. Melissa’s dress was actually well-received by the judges, however, as Alyssa stated, “there is nothing avant-garde about a little black dress.” Daniel’s was unsuccessful because, as Georgina observed, “it was very literal.” And Jeffrey’s look, while it definitely pushed the boundaries of fashion, did not flatter his model.
The winner this week is Mychael! Mychael’s dress definitely achieved a winning combination! It represented the insect’s movement, it was avant-garde, and stylish all at the same time. The loser is Daniel. While we loved his upbeat personality in this competition, his look just didn’t make the cut this week.
What did you guys think? Do you think the judges chose the right winner/loser?
