In a shocking December 2013 cover story from ‘Vanity Fair,’ Liberty Ross is speaking out for the first time after being blindsided in July 2012, when her then-husband Rupert Sanders was caught and photographed cheating on her with Kristen Stewart. Read how she felt after hearing the ‘horrible’ news.
Liberty Ross thought she had it all — a successful director of a husband, Rupert Sanders, a hot modeling career, and two gorgeous children — until a cheating scandal rocked her world and her marriage. “I’m not a quitter. But I didn’t have any more to give, you know?” See what she said to Vanity Fair about surviving the affair that made headlines around the world.
Liberty Ross & Rupert Sanders — She Speaks Out About His Affair With Kristen Stewart To ‘Vanity Fair’
Liberty, 35, reveals that Rupert — who directed Kristen Stewart in the hit film, Snow White and the Huntsman — told her about the photos 20 hours before they appeared on the cover of Us Weekly. The photos showed Rupert kissing Kristen, who was half his age — at the time, he was 41 and she was 22. “It was totally out of character.” Then on July 24, 2012, a tearful Ross was faced with the photos, which were up everywhere.
The stunned wife and mom hired a media PR woman who specializes in crisis management. “I was able to be completely secluded. I just visualized being this sort of Masai warrior. I was just going to stand very still and very strong, and just let it all roll past me. I tried to keep as far away from it as I could and to understand that this is my family and it’s the most precious thing to me,” she told Vanity Fair.
Kristen’s other half, Robert Pattinson, was more used to the media attention and scrutiny. He laid low immediately after the affair but within three weeks, he was back on the scene promoting his movie Cosmopolis (and looking better than ever).
Liberty admits how hard it was for her, a relatively unknown model and actress in the United States at the time: “It was horrible. It was really the worst, really the worst.”
The decision to give up on her marriage was not an easy one (she filed for divorce on Jan. 25) , but it was necessary: “I’m not a quitter. I’ve done everything I could to be the perfect wife and mother and really support my husband. But I didn’t have any more to give, you know?”
Liberty Moves On
Liberty felt as if a part of her “died” after the affair but she is slowing moving forward. “I have no words to describe what we went through. But I think, for me, something always has to completely die for there to be a rebirth. And, for me, I feel like I’m going through a rebirth.”
“It’s very strange for me because my parents have been together for 50 years, so [divorce] is something I never, ever thought I would do.”
