For her first design competition, Rihanna assembled a group of 12 designers who ALL show potential to design for celebrities in the music industry — but it isn’t short of drama! Read on to find out what happened on the premiere episode.
On the premiere episode of Styled To Rock, the 12 designers are immediately greeted by Rihanna herself — what a pleasant surprise! The singer/designer tells the contestants that she “hand-picked” them from thousands of applicants and thinks that their work was the best. She introduces them to their mentors/challenge judges: rapper Pharrell Williams, super model Erin Wasson, and her own stylist Mel Ottenberg. The contestants are already ecstatic beyond belief over the fact that they get to work with these industry professionals.
‘Styled To Rock’ Premiere Recap:
Next, Rihanna explains what they are competing for: a fashion spread in Glamour magazine, a chance to get to work with her design team, and $100,000 in cash! Pharrell comments that getting to work with Rihanna’s team is an incredible opportunity. We wonder which designer will prove worthy of this position!
Before they head to the loft where they will be living, Rihanna meets with each designer and takes a look at the outfit she had them make for the first day that best exemplified their design aesthetic. From the looks of it, these designers are anything but typical. The competition should be one for the books!
The next day, the designers are shown their large workroom and given their first challenge of the show by Rihanna, Erin Wasson and Mel Ottenberg. They are to chose a muse from the music industry and design an outfit that best represents that performer’s identity. The winning look will be displayed in the Grammy Museum in Downtown L.A. How exciting! They have two days to make the look before presenting it to the judges. They quickly decide on their muses and looks before getting to work.
On the second day of working, Erin and Mel come in to check on the designer’s work. They meet with each person and get a feel for who is struggling and who has a good idea of their creation. After having a conversation away from the designers, Erin and Mel call out six designers names and tell them to step forward: Ahni (muse: Nicki Minaj), Andre (Madonna), Dexter (Prince), Autumn (Katy Perry), Laura (Gwen Stefani), and Jordan (Janet Jackson). These six designers cannot be eliminated and one of them will be the winner for this week. The remaining six should be nervous — the judges will choose the loser among the group. This weird, pre-runway elimination really shakes up the remaining six — hopefully they can pull it together so they don’t go home!
Time for critique!
The guest judge for the first challenge is the curator for the Grammy Museum, and the permanent judges will be Mel, Erin, and Pharrell. Should be an interesting panel. Erin pays special attention to how the garments are made, telling some designers that they needed to improve several elements of their designs. Pharrell looks like he will be the swing vote this season; some looks he loves and some he hates. Mel sees the outfits with a stylist’s eye and comments on several designers’ ensembles as a whole.
The winner this week is Ahni! Her Nicki Minaj look was perfect for the “Super Bass” singer and definitely looks great in the museum. The loser was Keenan, who’s male form of Beyonce just did not communicate to the judges.
What did you guys think? Did Ahni’s look deserve to win?
