Kanye kicked off his ‘Yeezus’ tour on Oct. 19 at the KeyArena in Seattle and made sure God was on his side by bringing a man dressed as Jesus on stage with him!
With an album title like Yeezus, we saw something like this coming — but not to this degree! Kicking off his 23-city tour in Seattle, Wa. on Oct. 19, Kanye West created a theme for the show revolving around his quest to find his higher power. And yes, it was as crazy as it sounds.
Kanye West’s Wild First ‘Yeezus’ Concert
Throughout the evening, there were various nods to religion and spirituality, including a red-eyed demon, 12 dancing “disciples” and incense being carried across the stage as if it were a Catholic mass.
The real hit of the night, however, was when a Jesus lookalike appeared on stage, upon which Kanye exclaimed “White Jesus, is that you? … Oh, s***!”
Cue massive applause and the 2004 single, “Jesus Walks” to end the show.
In true Kanye style, real-life Jesus wasn’t the only shocker of the night. In fact, the show itself started two hours late, apparently due to an equipment truck being stolen! Although this gave the audience plenty of time to ruminate on what lay ahead, we’re sure they didn’t still expect to see Yeezus and Jesus!
Kanye got preachy very early on, rapping from atop a 60-foot mountain towering from the stage. Later, he performed a moving tribute to his late mom, Donda West, who passed away in 2007. This was the most emotional piece of the evening and featured Kanye actually breaking down and falling to his knees in a heart-wrenching rendition of “Hey Mama.”
Even the souvenir merchandise was surprising and different, the strangest items being Confederate flag t-shirts and tote bags. If you say so, Kanye!
Kanye West Suffering Technical Difficulties
Unfortunately, Jesus or not, there may be trouble ahead. The Oct. 20 concert in Vancouver, just the second show of the tour, had to be canceled due to technical issues. Although it’s since been rescheduled for Halloween, let’s hope this isn’t a trend! Fans were already upset enough by the late start of the first show.
And nobody likes a tardy Jesus.
Kim Kardashian Supports The ‘Yeezus’ Tour
Kim Kardashian, 33, was present for her man’s opening weekend, and she was also there in spirit thanks to Kanye’s pre-concert attire. He wore a t-shirt showcasing an image of Kim in pearls and the word ‘Yeezus’ across her body.
Kim also tweeted her support before the show:
