Before watching tonight’s series premiere of ‘Reign,’ get the scoop from the show’s stars — direct from the show’s Toronto set!
The CW’s highly anticipated fantasy period drama finally arrives Oct. 18 at 9 p.m., and pretty soon, you won’t remember what your life was like without it. It’s like Downton Abbey mixed with Game of Thrones and Marie Antoinette. Add a few dashes of CW-style romance and excitement, and you’ve pretty much got Reign — a piping fresh, and totally irresistible, take on Mary Queen of Scots.
HollywoodLife.com recently visited Reign‘s Toronto, Canada, set for the scoop on the historical sudser fit for a queen.
‘Reign’ Star Talks Romance — And Betrayal
No CW series would be complete without a major love triangle, and Reign‘s comes courtesy of Mary (Adelaide Kane), Francis (Toby Regbo) and Francis’ half-brother Sebastian (Torrance Coombs). Though Mary and Francis are betrothed, their courtship isn’t what you’d call ‘romantic.’
“Historically speaking — and we are going to stay true to this — she does end up marrying Francis, so that’s a foregone conclusion,” Adelaide told reporters. “[Mary and Francis] do find each other attractive, but she wants to fall in love with him, and he very much holds her at an arm’s distance, because the political climate is really unsteady and he can’t afford to have feelings for her.”
Meet Catherine, A Royal Pain In Mary’s Butt
There are also those looking to thwart Mary’s efforts, namely Catherine (Megan Follows), whose vendetta against her is made very clear on the pilot. “She’s pretty committed to the protection of her son,” Megan said about Catherine’s anti-Mary motivation.
For assistance in said protection, Catherine turns to the prophet Nostradamus (Rossif Sutherland), though Megan told us not to expect Reign to become a full-on supernatural drama. “Even I don’t know how much [of the supernatural] there will be,” she told us. “Except I can say that sometimes what you think something is is not what it is.”
Reign’s ‘Risky’ Sex Scenes
Before Kenna’s infamous self-love scene was trimmed down for the final cut of the Reign pilot, Caitlin Stasey told us she had quite a time filming one of the episode’s most stand-out moments. “Herself and herself are very well-acquainted, as we’ve all seen,” she remarked. “It’s very risky; it’s incredibly brave of them. I’m surprised that, A, it got written, and B, that it got filmed.”
Caitlin’s one regret about the scene? Sending it to her mom! “I got an email from my sister, being like, ‘Caitlin, why would you think it’d be a good idea?'” Caitlin recalled. “And lots of expletives that I’m not going to share with you now.”
