I don’t think that what Lorde said was meant to be taken offencively. She simply said that she didnt agree with what the words of the song were protraying. I also think that Selena was very mature and smart with how she stuck for herself. Both of the girls are very talented and I think that they will be much more successful if they become friends instead of keeping a wall in front of each other for what the lyrics of a song were and someone’s opinion.

well selenas dimwitted attempts at defining femnism failed dismally after she first compliments lorde… then slags her off twice later in the interview. she obviously shares taylors philosophy that is “support-other-women-but-if-you-diss-my-a**-then-you-hate-all-women”. read kiddies.

lorde never “bashed” selena as an artist. if you actually bothered to read what lorde says about selena gomez you will notice that lordes objection was to selenas song “come and get it” which she percieves as sending the wrong message to impressionable young girls. – not a personal dig to be found in sight. clearly selena is just as bad at reading as her defenders. selenas rebuttal is also typical of a spoilt little princess with the mentality of a 14yr old who isnt used to being challenged.

lorde is a breath of fresh air and is making selena look like an amatuer. sorry but there is a nice exit door with selenas name all over it. she should stick to what shes really good at. hanging around with people who are ten times more famous than her.

selena took swipes at lorde whereas lorde merely criticises selenas work. BIG DIFFERENCE between an insult and a critique.

@hungus: Well,I’d prefer you learn how to ‘spell’ the word ‘amateur’ if you’re going to try and diss someone with it. When you can’t spell your diss words, you come off looking like the ‘dimwit’. And—you do…
Next: It actually seems more like Selena has the philosophy; “If you want to diss—then prepare to be dissed.” Which makes perfect sense. Especially from some 9-or-10th-rater,who hasn’t been on the scene but for a hot-minute,and has QUITE A LOT MORE TO LEARN. As do You—you ‘I wanna show my intelligence, but I really don’t have any.’ know-nothing,loser…
Selena meant absolutely no harm, nor does she cause any, with her song ‘Come & Get-It’. It’s her own personal feelings about someone,it rocks,it has great depth emotion…Unlike you. You have as much depth as a contact-lens holder…
Your comment is typical of a snobby,self-absorbed,insignificant little dweeb, with the mentality of a 10-year-old.
Before telling others to ‘read’—maybe you should try and learn how to first, what say? If you can read anything beyond the comics—I’ll be pleasantly surprised…
And of course ‘lorde is breath of fresh air'(as you put it)She’s only what 6? 7?? Or is that just the age her intelligence(and yours)is proving to be?
Frankly,young songstress knows Nothing,and you—know even less…
Lorde doesn’t merely ‘critique'(as you say) she tries to throw-salt, when she should keep quiet where grown folks are concerned—just like You…
Now—run along home to your mama,cause I know you’re out past curfew,and they’re worried sick…
Later all; Hollywood—out.

she would have best left her comments at “shes a good artist” but her ego took over, next thing she is putting lorde down AFTER claiming that women must support other women.
well ive always understood “feminism” as creating equal rights between men and women, that women should support other women. not give false praise to a person, then insult them afterwards.criticism is never off the agenda for anyone no matter what you believe. selenas “understanding” of feminism is completley unfounded and very insincere, and her care for the cause is nil. oh yeah and taylor played the feminism card against tina fey and amy poehler, so you can add “unoriginal” to selenas reasons to bring up feminism.
she is being challenged and backhanded compliments all shes got for fire.
selena is totally irresponsible; promoting an ideal then contradicting herself by doing the exact opposite of what she claims to believe is right. if theres anyone who isnt thinking things through its her. sorry but lorde is challenging selena who doesnt have the brainpower to offer a decent rebuttal.”

Sorry to let you down but… Selena… she really needs to see that Lorde was stating her opinion… You should stop acting like your all that too cause something tells me it took you a long time to think that through…Also stop correcting peoples grammer… like you know any better plus she’s 16 not 6… she is turning 17 on November… you must have left the 1 there by accident… By the way she isn’t an amateur… lorde has been in the business since she was like 13… Royals isn’t her first song genius… She has like two albums its just that her music has better lyrics and melody than Come & Get It… not everybody has to like your music pal… so stop acting like a know it all and just take it. BYE ;)

I’ve got to side with Lorde on this one. Lorde says things in a way that isn’t condescending and is honest at the same time. She gives her opinion with a perfect level of respect and critique. From the interviews I’ve heard, she sounds very humble. She said she thought the message in Selena’s song wasn’t good for younger viewers. That’s probably a very true statement. Plus, I think the style of Lorde’s music is a nice alternative to the normal, mainstream music that’s playing nowadays. Keep up the good work Lorde!! And don’t let the mainstream life suck you in!!

Lorde is amazingly talented. if she wants RESPECT, MONEY, AND FAME
She should stop bashing other artists.
The people who lorde criticized are people really Famous and with lots of fans
So if lorde keeps bashing others no body will like her because of all what she said about other people idols.

I think this statement is exactly the point, alot judge the famous on superficial aspects of what defines them – looks!! Wakeup honey, that fades and whats left? An old (although probably surgery enhanced) shell of a person, who aint sexy anymore, but really really tries hard to recapture what they once had – examples, Madonna, Cher ……..

I’m with Lorde 100% in all of this.

Firstly, in the original interview Lorde said that she said she loved the song Come and get It, however she just said that she couldn’t stand by its message, especially since it was being marketed at young girls. She concluding that in most instances with pop music at the moment, you have to put aside any problems you have lyrically and just enjoy the music on a sonic level, because sexism and anti-feminism is common place in the music industry at the moment. So in no way was she tearing down Selena, but rather critiquing the music industry at large.

But most importantly i am not sure that Selena fully understands the concept of feminism, just because Lorde is a female does not mean that it is anti-feminist to critique the message being given in a song by a female artist. Because that would be a double standard which is exactly what feminism is trying to prevent. Feminism is about promoting equal rights and equal opportunity to both sexes, so to say females who call out other females are anti-feminist is very misguided.

You have to understand that the definition of feminism varies for every individual (due to our upbringing, our experiences, and our knowledge). Do not critique other people on their understanding of feminism, as you are not any closer to fully understanding feminism. The definition of feminism is constantly changing the more our society changes. It is not stagnant. All the best with your growth.

Lorde dissed Selena’s “Come and Get It” and said that she was sick of the way women are being portrayed in songs and other types of media. She also dissed Justin Bieber because of his behavior. She said Taylor was too flawless and unattainable. These three people are uber famous and she shouldn’t have said that. “Come and Get It” isn’t even a sexual song. I like Lorde’s song but, she shouldn’t have said that about Selena, Justin, and Taylor. She’s a newbie in the music business. She should have more respect

wow…so to comment on the objectification of women and how sex is constantly thrust into our faces instead of being alluded to in videos, songs and other media when you haven’t had sex or are maybe even too young to have sex is a big no-no? Did you ever think that maybe she’s one of those rare teenagers who has chosen not to have sex until she was married or until she decided it was the right time? *crickets chirping* I’m not surprised.

First off, I have nothing against talking about sex in your music and personally, I like “Come and get it” and I believe even Lorde said that she liked the song, she just didn’t like the message she got from it and I totally get it because if you actually listen to the lyrics, it does seem to obvious.

Believe it or not, you can have a love-hate relationship with a song, any song these days.

I would also like to mention that I’m not a feminist. I would also like to note that you come off as a stuck up snob who hasn’t woken up on the right side of the bed in twenty three years. Even if she has never had sex before that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have the right to say what I’m sure a lot of other people are thinking. Sex is constantly being used to sell music instead of the actual talent it takes to make the music and I find Selena’s comment extremely childish. Hear that, Selena?

Okay, I’m going to stop now because I don’t see the point in arguing with the people on this site.

Read my comments below. Lorde is a total phony. She calls herself a feminist yet she criticizes left or right. She calls out Selena—but she says Miley Cyrus is her favorite female performer? Why not call out her, or Rhianna. I think she dissed Selena because they’re close to the same age, and she wants to put doubts in people’s minds. She disses T-Swiss for bein “too perfect”. Who cares what this brat thinks?

She’s a pretentious phony, a total twit. I don’t want to be thrown songs as seen through the eyes of someone who knows b. s. cultural studies/feminist/postmodernist snotty academic speak. She’s not a true feminist. She’s just going for a niche market, and create an image. Lord.

Selena’s song Come and Get It does portray the role of being a woman in a needy way though, the entire song is a about waiting on a boy/man who doesn’t love you back and being content with this. It is anti-feminist it implies the role of a woman is to wait upon a mans affection and to be defined by it. She didn’t say Selena was anti-feminist. I am sure Selena is a feminist but the song wasn’t written by her and really it aimed to capitilize on Selena’s and Justin’s breakup.

She hasn’t called out Miley or Rihanna, because feminism believes it is a women’s right to express themselves sexually in anyway providing they find it empowering. Selena’s song however does not imply she is sexually empowering herself, but rather waiting for a man who is not interested in her.

Also she didn’t actually diss taylor for being perfect, she explained this on her tumblr; what she was trying to comment on was celebrity worship. She meant that taylor swift was someone who growing up that she always aspired to be because she perceived her to look perfect, and now that she is working in the industry she understand that no one will ever look like taylor swift because of photoshop culture and celebrity culture.

I agree with Selena. Feminism shouldn’t be about criticizing other women for choosing to portray themselves in a way that involves enhancing or playing on their personal sexuality. This whole “sexual portrayal of women is always negative, exploitative, and objectifying” argument that feminists keep making is too simplistic and only further degrading and limiting of women in general. And Lorde, you’re a 16 year old hispter with lyrics that are about as deep as a puddle the drool on a pillow. What do you really know about the negotiations of sexuality and gender in the adult world? Nothing. Don’t pretend to have any more depth than a loud mouthed teenager with an ego problem. Honestly, you’re just as arrogant in interviews as Bieber. Has Lorde even had sex at her age yet? How can she criticize sexual portrayal of women if she’s never experienced the act of sex?

Sounds like this is hitting a little too close to home for Selena. Lorde gets press for her music and strong opinions. Selena gets press for her tabloid ready love life and cultural insensitivity. I think Selena resents the fact that Lorde is seen as a serious artist and she (Selena) is seen as Disney manufactured joke.

I just wished Lorde wouldn’t have said anything. What Come & Get It is about is a feeling, not the gender of the singer. To feel that strongly (Even if it seems desperate/foolish) that you sit and wait for a person because you like them that much has nothing to do with feminism. Just that feeling, which I’m sure we’ve all felt, even if we don’t act on it.

The things that Lorde is saying really isn’t as bad as the media is making it out to be. Honestly, it’s not. But, am I the only one that finds the things she says accurate? Particularly about Bieber and Swift. People can call them disses, but a lot of what she says are things that people agree with… I for one commend her for having the guts to say it, knowing she’ll face scrutiny for it.

This is the stupidest article I’ve read for a while. Lorde did not diss Selena; she just criticised the lyrics of one of her songs. Selena did not diss Lorde either. I do take issue with Selena’s (lack of) understanding of the idea of feminism though. And I can’t believe people keep going on about the Taylor comment; you’d think she’d actually said something offensive the way people (mainly the media) have reacted.

You’re an idiot. You can’t be a “feminism.” Feminism is the movement, people that partake in the movement are “feminists.” Also, she isn’t relating her number one hit song to her ideals nor is she saying that because she has a hit song she’s a feminist. That makes absolutely no sense. Maybe YOU should verify your facts about, well, everything before you type a whole bunch of nonsense.

And last time I checked, Lorde is still number 1 on the charts. Her current place is in front of everyone. Too bad Lorde didn’t say something worse, like point out the fact that Selena is talentless and put HER in her place- behind people that actually possess talent.
