Dogs really are man’s best friend — and they somehow know how to reach out to even their most timid friends. In an adorable moment caught on camera, a gentle giant makes a connection with a boy who usually shies away from touch. Watch the heartwarming video here.

Hernan, now 5 years old, has Down Syndrome, and he typically avoids any kind of physical interaction. But when a gentle labrador retriever named Himalaya showed him patience and tenderness, he responded in the most adorable way. Have your tissues ready, and watch the boy and dog’s sweet moment, captured on video.

Labrador Befriends Down Syndrome Boy In Sweet Video

Hernan, a little boy from La Plata, Buenos Aires, was 3 years old when this touching video was filmed in 2012.

Accompanying the sweet video on YouTube, Herman’s mother, Ana wrote:

Hernan is a bit withdrawn and flees from physical contact. He does not like be touched, but Himalaya [the dog] insisted so patiently, and she was so soft that’s why it is so moving, she is left to do anything.

Ana explained that Himalaya is Hernan’s uncle’s dog. What happens when they met was truly heartwarming. Watch the video below.

Young Boy With Down Syndrome Responds To Gentle Dog

When Hernan first notices Himalaya — who is nearly double his size! — approaching, he backs away from her, scared.

He watches the dog intently, but is unsure about interacting with her. When Himalaya gently stretches out her paw, Hernan takes it, if only briefly.

Himalaya seems determined to make friends with the little boy, so she takes a different approach: she sits up and places her paw on Hernan’s shoulder, really making contact with him.

Hernan eventually pulls Himalaya into a hug — and she doesn’t even mind when he pets her roughly. At the end of the video, the pair settle down next to each other.

The boy clearly wants the dog to stop touching him. He pushes the paws and physically tries to move away. Pets are great and I think a dog is a great way to help that boy overcome his fear of physical contact, but this article is clearly misinterpreting this video.

Buenos Aires is in Argentina, not Brazil. In fact, is the Capital City.
