On the season five premiere of ‘Glee,’ we knew both McKinley High and New York City would be taking on the Beatles — but we had no idea it would take us where it did! Rachel went to her ‘Funny Girl’ call back while Kurt and Blaine finally decided where they wanted their relationship to go.
It’s finally here! Glee premiered on Sept. 26 on Fox, and it was just as exciting as we expected — not only is there a surprising new couple at McKinley High, but we finally get to see if Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss) will make their relationship official!
Rachel Heads To ‘Funny Girl’ Call Backs
When the episode “Love, Love, Love” began, we saw Rachel (Lea Michele) heading to her New York call backs for “Funny Girl.” While she only auditioned with actor, Ioan Guffold, for about 30 seconds before casting director Peter Facinelli, stopped it. Rachel was unsure if being stopped so quickly was a good thing or bad — until she overheard the casting director, say she was perfect but a little young.
Naturally, Rachel sang an extremely emotional version of “Yesterday” while overhearing the news, kicking off Beatles week one.
So, she took on a waitress job at a nearby diner with Santana (Naya Rivera). Lucky for her, the casting director and Ioan come in for burgers, where she gets the chance to prove that she’s a star by performing “Hard Days Night” in an awesome performance before walking out!
McKinely High Gets New Principal & Shocking New Couple
Meanwhile, back in McKinley, Artie (Kevin McHale) took Kitty (Becca Tobin) on a carnival date. She decided she liked him but wanted to keep that secret to save her reputation with the cheerleaders.
We saw a cute side of her with Artie, but she still refused to publicly date him. They sang “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away,” while we see Artie get hurt by her hiding their love.
This caused Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) to get upset and announce their relationship in the glee club, because she really wanted Kitty to respect her friend!
For the first time ever, we actually saw Kitty show emotion — she admitted that, while she did keep it secret because of her reputation, it was also because she was afraid to get hurt because she really likes him! Aww!
The guys of the glee club — Blaine, a long-haired Sam (Chord Overstreet), Jake (Jacob Artist), Ryder (Blake Jenner) – realized how unhappy Tina was, so they performed a super-Beatle-esqe performance of “I Saw Her Standing There” for her and the rest of the glee gals! (We’re guessing this is prepping for next week’s episode, “Tina in the Sky with Diamonds.”)
Sam, Ryder and Blaine offered themselves as a prom date for Tina after the performance, and she chose Sam — “the least Asian and least gay,” as she referred to him.
On the administrative side of McKinley, there were also changes!
Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) framed Principal Figgins (Iqbal Theba), so he was demoted to custodian, well she took over as principal of McKinley! Sue lets Will Shuester (Matthew Morrison) and Coach Roz Washington (NeNe Lekes) know that if they don’t win the national championship, they both will be fired! Pressure’s on!
Kurt & Blaine Get Back Together
The relationship we’ve been waiting for has finally been resolved. Kurt and Blaine have a low-key heart-to-heart on the stairs outside McKinley High, where they decide to give it a try again! (Excuse us while we swoon!)
Kurt sang to him, “Got to Get You Into My Life,” and Blaine joined in for an exciting performance, sealed by a kiss. However, when Blaine took to the glee club to tell everyone he wanted to propose — with the help of other show choirs — they weren’t exactly supportive.
Naturally, he began singing “Help” — so fitting! It was adorable seeing the glee club run to other choir groups to get help — including to approaching the Warblers (yes, that means Grant (Sebastian Smythe) was there!).
While they thought it was all a surprise, Kurt had already known about the proposal when his dad, Burt (Mike O’Malley) drove him to the mystery location. Kurt told his dad he loved Blaine, but knew how young they were. Burt told him that Blaine had come to him, but that his opinion didn’t matter!
“Hear what the guy has to say. All you have to say is ‘yes, no, or maybe,” his dad told him, letting Kurt one hundred precent make up his own mind.
As Kurt walked up to the house, a marching band came out, playing “All You Need Is Love,” immediately making up tear up.
When Kurt walked into the house, he was greeted by Rachel, Santana, and a surprise guest — Mercedes (Amber Riley)! Then, the Warblers, other choirs, and the McKinley Glee Club were all there to see him and the big moment!
As he walked down the spiral staircase — where Blaine and he first met — rose petals fell all around for one of the most romantic scenes ever in Glee. “All You Need is Love” turned into “(S)he Loves You.”
Blaine gave what may have been the best speech ever, before getting down on one knee and proposing to Kurt — with everyone there to witness it.
And . . . Kurt said ‘YES!’ Now that is going to be one fabulous wedding.
Honestly, it was the most pleasantly surprising ending! But does this mean that Kurt will stay in Lima? Will they do long distance until Blaine graduates, then he’ll head to NY? I guess we’ll have to tune in next week!
