This is already shaping up to be a season to remember. Not only have all four original judges returned, but the talent this time around — including Matthew, 20 — is out of this world.
The first set of blind auditions aired Sept 23 on NBC, and the judges brought the crowd to their feet, opening the show with Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock and Roll.” Christina Aguilera belted out her signature vocal run, reminding us all she’s back and ready to win; Adam Levine and Blake Shelton rocked out on their guitars; and Cee Lo Green shined on stage in his sunglasses and red leather ensemble.
“It’s amazing how we all fall back into those chairs and pick up right where we left off,” said Blake.
Fastest Four-Chair Turn In Show History
But it wasn’t just the judges’ return helping season five make history. Matthew Schuler, a 20-year-old college student, sang a rendition of Young the Giant’s “Cough Syrup” that earned him a button push from all four judges in record time — he only had to sing the first few words before they all turned around.
And they couldn’t get enough!
Adam gave Matthew a standing ovation — on top of his chair — Blake clapped his way right up to Matthew on stage, and Christina one-upped Blake by grabbing Matthew in a two-arm hug.
It was the embrace that won this talented young man over. Begging, “Please let me be the first female coach to win this thing,” Team Christina came away with its first member.
‘The Voice’ Season 5: Show-Stopping Talent
But Matthew Schuler wasn’t all there was to write home about. Caroline Pennell, 17, took to the stage singing Ellie Goulding’s “Anything Could Happen”. She had a very unique Regina Spektor–esque inflection to her voice, and it didn’t take long for both Cee Lo and Blake to turn their chairs.
Donna Allen, 55, has high hopes of becoming the first person over 40 to win The Voice. Singing Joe Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful,” she had a hearty richness in her voice and a vibrato that sent chills up my spine. Christina told her, “That voice is like the heavens opening up.” Adam even compared her toTina Turner and Whitney Houston and snagged her for his team!
But it was James Wolpert, 22, singing Jack White’s “Love Interruption” that had the judges fighting “tooth and nail” for him. “This is where the gloves come off,” said Cee Lo. As the final performance of the night, it wasn’t until he hit his upper register that all four judges turned. They sang nothing but his praises and now this young Apple store employee is a proud member of Team Adam.
