Charlie may not be who you had in mind to play Christian in the film adaptation of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey.’ He may not have even been on your radar for the role! But maybe once you get to know him, you’ll see that he’s a pretty good fit for the sexy part.
Either you know Charlie Hunnam, 33, as the motorcycle-driving badass in Sons of Anarchy, or you don’t know him at all. But we’re here to help. Though Charlie may bring good looks and a ridiculously ripped body to the role of Christian Grey in Fifty Shades of Grey, there’s much more to him than just a pretty face.
Charlie Hunnam: Meet The New Christian Grey
1. He Knows How To Play A Bad Boy
Like we said, Charlie’s best known for his role as Jax Teller in FX’s show Sons of Anarchy. As Jax, Charlie has pulled off an impressive feat by playing a ruthless leader of a motorcycle gang who is willing to do some hardcore stuff, but is also a sensitive, caring, lovable man. That mix will serve him well when he trades in his leather biker jacket for leather S&M gear.
2. He’s A Brit
Believe it or not, Charlie hails from Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Though you’d never know it — over his nearly 15 years of acting he’s been able to hone his American accent. But again, that British charm and suaveness will be perfect when applied to Christian Grey.
3. He’s A Lover
After dating fellow actress, Katharine Towne, for just four weeks in 1999, she and Charlie tied the knot! The couple divorced in 2002, however. In 2007, he met Morgana McNelis, an American jewelry designer. The couple has been together ever since, and in July 2013 they moved to Los Angeles.
4. He Has A Sense Of Humor Too
Charlie isn’t all good looks and badassery. One of the first big roles he landed was as Lloyd, a British college student, on the Fox TV comedy Undeclared. The show didn’t last long, but it has fingerprints on it from many of today’s huge comedy stars — Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Jason Segel, and more!
5. He Isn’t Just An Actor
Charlie has the looks, the body, and the brains. Besides taking on the role of Christian Grey, Charlie is currently developing a screenplay he wrote entitled Vlad. The script was bought by Summit Entertainment in 2009 and with Brad Pitt’s Plan B Studios signed on as co-producers, the movie should start production in the near future.
Charlie’s casting may have taken you by surprise, but you have to admit — he sounds (and looks) pretty perfect. What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Was he the right choice to star in Fifty Shades of Grey? Let us know!
