Sun protection isn’t just about sunscreen! You also have to protect your skin once you’re off the beach. Keep reading to find out all of our top picks for healthy after-sun skin.
We know that we’re constantly talking about sunscreen over here at HollywoodLife.com — but hey, you’ll thank us in forty years when you’re both wrinkle and cancer free! But as much as we talk about sun protection, sometimes accidents do just happen. You fell asleep on the beach, your sunscreen expired — whatever. To help you out after you’ve accidentally gotten some summer color, we’re bringing you our top after sun care picks. Check out the gallery to shop all our favorites.
After Sun Care — Top Aloe Picks
If you’ve got a bit of a burn from too much sunbathing, it’s aloe to the rescue! This classic sunburn remedy nourishes, moisturizes and — most importantly — soothes burnt skin. Since we don’t live on a tropical island and can’t just break open an aloe plant, the next best thing we’ve found is the Aloe line from The Body Shop. We’re big fans of everything in this line, but are really taken with the Aloe Protective Restoring Mask, which soothes and strengthens our skin as we recover. Also great is the Aloe Soothing Night Cream, a really rich cream that soaks into our skin as we sleep. Finally, we think the Aloe Calming Toner is genius, because it makes cleaning a sunburned face gentle and easy (plus, it doesn’t dry out out already dehydrated skin like an alcohol based toner would).
Bonus — aloe is great for your skin even if you aren’t burnt (it makes skin more even and has anti-bacterial properties) so you can use these products once you’re fully healed too!
Best Soothing Lotions
Aloe isn’t the only ingredient for skin that’s spent some time in the sun. Some of our favorite after sun lotions are soothing and cooling — and packed with vitamins to help our skin repair damage and dehydration. We love Yes To Cucumbers Natural After-Sun Serum, because it has green tea to reduce inflammation and also has a slight shimmer to make skin look more luminous. Yonka Lait Apres-Soleil is great too, because the thick lotion is packed with nourishing ingredients like Vitamin A to encourage skin regeneration. Also check out Crabtree & Evelyn Verbene and Lavender Body Lotion. The lavender soothers skin — plus, it smells heavenly.
Best Color Extenders
Rumor has it that some people actually get tan in the summertime — who knew? We’re so pale that all we’ve ever gotten is burnt, but if you want to extend your tan so it doesn’t fade as quickly, check out Yonka Prolongateur de Bronzage. This cream protects against anti-oxidant damage that fades color and contains a slight golden shimmer that makes skin glow. Also check out Mary Kay After-Sun Replenishing Gel — while technically not a color extender, it hydrates and protects skin so well that you’ll notice your tan sticking around long after you’ve left the beach.
