The final eight-episode run of ‘Breaking Bad’ kicked off last night, August 11, picking up smack dab in the middle of Walter White’s chaotic life. Between Walt confronting Hank and Jesse having an emotional breakdown, the hard-hitting show had us on the edge of our seats and we were left completely STUNNED by what went down in the premiere.
Thank god — Breaking Bad is back! It might not be good for our hearts, but the most intense show on TV returned on August 11, and with only 8 episodes left in the series, we’re already racing towards the finish line. The mid-season premiere definitely made sure we had no time to catch our breath — here are the wildest things that happened in the episode. Oh yeah, spoilers ahead!
‘Breaking Bad’ Premiere: 5 Most Shocking Moments
1. Hank Loses His Mind
What would you do if you found out that a person you considered a close friend — a family member — turned out to be the crystal meth drug kingpin you’ve been searching for for years? You can imagine Hank’s (Dean Norris) complete nervous breakdown upon finally discovering that his brother-in-law, Walter White (Bryan Cranston), was Heisenberg, but we’ll admit — we didn’t quite expect him to have a near heart attack and crash his SUV into some poor guy’s lawn!
2. Skyler Is A Boss (Pronounced “Bawse”)
You remember Walter’s trapped, scared wife, Skyler (Anna Gunn), right? Well last night’s episode should make you forget she ever existed. As Heisenberg’s knowing, complicit partner, Skyler appears to be coming into her own (a mini-“The One Who Knocks,” if you will). When a former associate of Walter’s tries to bring him back into the drug game, it’s Skyler who lays down the law, which was awesome to see.
3. Walter Lies Right To Jesse’s Traumatized Face
Okay, so Walter lying to Jesse (Aaron Paul) isn’t the most shocking thing that’s ever happened in Breaking Bad — we could write a novel about how many times he’s done it. But the sheer selfishness and arrogance with which Walter lies to Jesse in the mid-season premiere is unbelievable. Knowing that Walter killed Mike, a tearful Jesse asks for the truth, and Walt at his worst, doesn’t give it: “Listen to me: I did not kill Mike. The last time that I saw him, he had his bag – the one that I brought him – and he got into his car and he drove away. And for all I know, he is alive and well…. Jesse, I need you to believe this,” he tells him instead. Man, this guy’s terrible.
4. Walter & Hank Come To Blows
When Hank realized that Walt was Heisenberg right before the break of this season, we were dying to know how he’d react. And after Walt finds a tracking bug on his car, Hank lets out all of his frustrations — with a monster punch to Walter’s skull! “It was you! All along it was YOU,” Hank screams. One episode in and the gauntlet has been laid down. Both of these guys know what cards the other is holding — we’ll just have to watch the next 7 episodes to see how they play them.
5. Everyone Knows Who Walter REALLY Is
Ironically, the craziest part of the mid-season premiere happened in the first five minutes. A flashforward brings us back to the season 5 premiere scene, when Walt was clearly on the run with a massive machine gun in his trunk, an alias and a full beard. We now know why. Walt returns to his house, which has been condemned and turned into an impromptu skatepark. Inside, the house we know so well has been completely stripped and broken down, and now the walls are only littered with “Heisenberg” graffiti. Back outside Walt runs into his next-door neighbor, who looks like she’s seen a ghost (or at least an at-large drug dealer). “Hello, Carol,” he wryly says as she drops a bag of groceries in horror.
We can’t wait until the action actually arrives at that flashforward — but then it’ll all be over! One thing’s for sure: if we were at all concerned that Breaking Bad might be losing some steam towards the end, the premiere slapped us in the face and made us realize that’d be impossible.
