How tragic! A couple and their 1-year-old daughter were riding a cable car in the Swiss Alps when an unexpected lurch sent all three tumbling out of the car. Both parents were killed in the fall, but the baby miraculously survived!
A one-year-old baby girl is expected to recover from a horrific fall from a cable car in the mountains, which led to the death of both of her parents. The little girl’s father, a Swiss native, returned with his family for vacation when the tragedy occurred. Both mom and dad died instantly from head wounds, while the little girl was miraculously found severely hurt, but alive.
Baby Survives Tragic Fall That Kills Her Parents
While the little girl suffered significant injuries, it was the baby carrier that she was in that saved her life after the fall. “The rucksack cushioned the fall. Otherwise, she would be dead too,” a rescue spokesman told the Daily Mail. The little girl was taken to a local hospital, where she has been nicknamed ‘Eidelweiss’ — the name of a mountain flower — by doctors and nurses.
A police spokesman told the Daily Mail:
The child is out of danger and we are contacting relatives of the dead abroad. We have no cause as yet as to why the cable car halted and then suddenly tipped over. But it was not designed for passenger use, that much is certain.
Cable Car Designed Only For Freight Used In Fall
The most upsetting part of this family’s story is that the cable car they were riding was a freight car not intended for passengers! The mountain worker who allegedly let the family use the cable car for purposes other than its intended is currently under investigation — along with the cause of the family’s decision to take a ride.
A spokesperson for the local police said:
The cable-car … is a freight vehicle that was being used on the day of the accident by an employee of the area. We are investigating how they came to be aboard and why.
How tragic! Our thoughts are with the family.
