Ellen DeGeneres Oscars Host

Step aside Seth MacFarlane, Billy Crystal, and ESPECIALLY Anne Hathaway and James Franco — the host for the 86th Academy Awards has been announced and it is…

Ellen DeGeneres! The daytime talk show host has been selected to host the 86th Academy Awards! Do YOU think she’s the right choice?

Ellen DeGeneres Will Host The Oscars

“I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time,” Ellen told our sister site Variety after the news broke. She also joked, saying, “you know what they say — the third time’s the charm.” The 86th annual Oscars will be broadcast on March 2, 2014.

Ellen previously emceed the 2007 show, and at this point she’s pretty much an old pro on center stage.

She’s cruising along with her show, Ellen, possibly the most entertaining daytime talk show on TV right now. And besides that she’s also cut her teeth hosting the 2001 and 2005 Emmy Awards (and she co-hosted in 2003), as well as the Grammy Awards in 1996 and 1997.

Ellen seems like a pretty good, safe choice for this year’s Oscars. She is so well-liked and good-spirited, but she also isn’t afraid to be a little irreverent and make fun of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Seth MacFarlane, who hosted the ceremony in 2013, was quite funny, but he was also extremely divisive — the Academy clearly wanted someone that everyone likes this time around.

And she’s a proven comedienne, so there isn’t really any fear that the debacle of Anne Hathaway and James Franco in 2010 will be repeated.

“We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres host the Oscars,” Academy Awards executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said in a statement. “As a longtime friend, we had always hoped to find a project for us to do together and nothing could be more exciting than teaming up to do the Oscars. There are few stars today who have Ellen’s gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity. She is beloved everywhere and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theatre, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are.”
