Nigella and Charles were granted a decree nisi at the High Court on July 31, in London — the first step to end their 10-year-marriage.
On July 7, Charles Saatchi announced he was filing for divorce from his wife, celebrity chef, Nigella Lawson. However, when their case was brought to the High Court for a quick 60-second trial, it was revealed that she actually filed.
Nigella Lawson Filed For Divorce From Charles Saatchi
Nigella, 53, and Saatchi, 70, know a thing or two about a speedy trial.
After their very public domestic-violence case June 9, Nigella filed for divorce.
The hearing in front of District Judge Anne Aitken lasted less than a minute, Mail Online reports. On the court documents, Lawson had been asked, “Is the respondent’s behavior as set out in your petition continuing?” to which she answered, “Yes.”
Neither Nigella nor Charles were present at the quick trial. They were granted a decree nisi, which states that the court sees no reason why a divorce cannot be granted. The exes will now wait for a decree absolute, the legal document that will end their marriage, which is usually issued six weeks and a day later.
Charles Saatchi: ‘This Is Heartbreaking’
On June 9, photos surfaced of of Charles supposedly grabbing his wife’s neck outside a New York City restaurant. He later called it a “playful tiff,” and explained that “there was no grip.”
Less then a month later, Charles announced he was filing for divorce in the following statement:
I am sorry to announce that Nigella Lawson and I are getting divorced. I feel that I have clearly been a disappointment to Nigella during the last year or so, and I am disappointed that she was advised to make no public comment to explain that I abhor violence of any kind against women, and have never abused her physically in any way. This is heartbreaking for both of us as our love was very deep, but in the last year we have become estranged and drifted apart. The row photographed at Scott’s restaurant could equally have been Nigella grasping my neck to hold my attention — as indeed she has done in the past.
While it has now come out that she actually filed for divorce, it has become evident that regardless of the details, the marriage is now over.
