‘Project Runway’ Season 12 Premiere: A Former Designer Gets A 2nd Chance

Thu, July 18, 2013 10:46pm EDT by 5 Comments

Within the first 10 minutes of the premiere episode, Heidi and Tim announce that a blast from the past will be back to try her chance at the big prize — and the new contestants were less than pleased! See how the ‘unconventional challenge’ turned out.

Project Runway season 12 promised to be more dramatic than ever before — and it certainly lived up to it’s expectations, with unexpected surprises and new rules at every turn. For starters, the designers will manage their own budget throughout the season, deciding when to splurge and when to save — but what happens when someone doesn’t budget? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

As all of the designers come out, there’s a familiar face in the crowd — and it’s Kate Pankoke! Kate, who was eliminated on episode 7 of season 11, is granted another chance at winning the big prize — and the new contestants certainly didn’t make her feel welcome! That quickly changes, when Kate offers up advice and tries to help out the others when they have questions regarding the competition — but can she be trusted?

This season the prize package is worth more than half a million dollars — the biggest prize ever. The designers are first introduced to Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn on the runway — but not the fashion runway! Instead, they are given parachutes which will be used as their primary fabric for the challenge — quite unconventional, as Tim says.

Sue Waller, a designer from Brooklyn, seems perplexed at the site of a sewing machine and asks for help — this doesn’t look like a good sign! Emotions run high on the second day in the workroom, where eye rolling, insults, and claws certainly come out. Apparently lunch was served with a side of sassy!

While Timothy’s method of burning the parachute fabric really impresses Tim, his art performance translation sounds quite questionable. Watching his model practice her dance moves certainly was a first on the show! Tim, it’s a fashion show not a play.

The Runway Show:

Tim Gunn gets to sit in on the runway show for the first time ever — and he can even choose to save a contestant if the judges are planning on sending them home! Zac Posen has filled in for Michael Kors this season as a judge and stylish star Kate Bosworth was the celebrity guest judge — so far the panel is looking quite stellar!

Before the show begins, Heidi announces yet another new twist. Unlike prior seasons, the judges will have no idea who crafted what look when it comes down the runway.

After all of the looks take their turn down the runway, former professional dancer Bradon McDonald is announced the first winner — and he is granted immunity for the next challenge! Somehow Timothy and his sloppy dress gets a save — and the first thing he does when he gets backstage is kick off his sky-high sandals! Maybe he should spend less time on his own look and more time prepping his model. Angela is the first designer to go home. Although her look wasn’t the worst, Tim did warn her and tell her it wasn’t a complete outfit — and that’s exactly why she was sent packing!

What did you think of the results of the premiere?

The contestant who made her dress of the black “trim” material should have been sent home. Not fair to go against the rules, no matter how good a seamstress you are.

The designer that did not use all the parachute should have been gone. Not fair to the other designer who used all of the parachute. Bad choice for the judges
