The world is still reeling from Cory’s shocking death on July 13, but a day later, his ‘Glee’ co-star paid tribute to him in the most heartwarming and touching way.
The Glee cast is beside themselves after the tragic death of their humble co-star, Cory Monteith. On July 14, the leader of the gleeks, Matthew Morrison showed immense strength and love, expressing his feelings — fittingly — through song, singing a heart-wrenching tribute to Cory during his concert in New York City. An eyewitness shared the details with HollywoodLife.com exclusively.
Matthew Morrison Performs Tribute To Cory Monteith
Before the show started at 54 Below, Matthew came out to address the audience, an eyewitness tells HollywoodLife.com. “Yesterday we lost a great soul, and a brother of mine,” Matthew said.
“I came here to perform a show and you guys came to see a show and that’s what’s going to happen,” he told the audience.
“He added that we’d have a good time and that it would be in Cory’s honor,” the eyewitness said. “It was definitely heartfelt and clear how devastated he was.”
Matthew dedicated the song “What I Did For Love,” a classic Broadway tune from A Chorus Line, and was so emotional he was barely able to get through the whole thing.
“The performance was very somber,” the eyewitness told us. “You could practically hear a pin drop. Everyone in the crowd was definitely paying their respects as well and it was a very emotional moment. He performed it beautifully, though it was obvious he was had to try to really keep it together.”
The concert-goer explained that he was teary-eyed during the performance, that was accompanied only by piano — which was touching in itself. He was joined by Brad Ellis, the piano player who has been in over 40 episodes of Glee.
“In all, the show almost felt like a celebration of Cory’s life,” the eyewitness said.
The song has special meaning for Matthew and Cory, and also Cory’s girlfriend and co-star, Lea Michele. Lea’s character Rachel Berry performed “What I Did For Love” during the premiere of Glee’s second season, and the lyrics closely mirror Lea’s relationship with Cory, especially now that he’s passed away:
Love is never gone
As we travel on
Love’s what we’ll remember
Kiss today goodbye
And point me toward tomorrow
We did what we had to do
Won’t forget, can’t regret
What I did for love.
Cory Monteith Dies: Lea Michele & Matthew Morrison Grieve
It sounds like the perfect way to honor Cory and remember the incredible relationship he had with Lea. HollywoodLife.com reported exclusively that she is taking Cory’s death extremely hard and that she’s “devastated” and “inconsolable.”
It’s at times like these that Lea and Matthew, and the other cast members of Glee can lean on each other. They’ll certainly need one another — Cory’s death has torn us up, and we can only imagine how his closest friends feel.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Cory’s friends, family and co-stars at this difficult time.
