John looked shocked as he reminisced over James, who tragically died on June 19, in a new interview. Clearly torn up by his friend’s passing, the actor spoke about how kind and giving James was, and explained why he will stand by the Gandolfini family during this horrible time.
On June 20, just a day after James Gandolfini, 51, shockingly suffered a heart attack and died in Italy, John Travolta, 59, revealed how James was a true friend, comforting him after the shocking death of his son in 2009. Now that James has tragically passed, John says it’s his turn to comfort James’ family.
John Travolta Reacts: James Gandolfini Was A Selfless Soul
In 2009, John’s son, Jett, died at the age of 17 after suffering a seizure. John revealed that out of all the support his family received in the wake of his son’s death, none was bigger or more heartfelt than James’.
“He went out of his way to come to Florida and wouldn’t leave until I was okay,” John told Robin Roberts on Good Morning America. “After a week I said, ‘Jim, we’re fine, we’ve got a lot of support.'”
John continued, saying that James’ unrelenting support and care was a breath of fresh air in an industry so often riddled with selfishness. “The idea that someone in our profession, that someone would go out of their way and not want to leave you — that’s the kind of soul that James was. He was a people person first and then everything else.”
John stated that he now plans on being there for the Gandolfini family to repay the favor.
James’ death is so tragic. He was clearly an amazing person and besides leaving an indelible mark on the movie and TV industries, he more importantly left a lasting impression off the screen. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.
