A tragic lawn mower accident left half of little Ireland Nugent’s legs severed. But she proved on June 17, that there is hope again as she took her first steps with her new prosthetic legs.

Ireland Nugent, 2, suffered the loss of her legs below her knees after her dad accidentally backed over her with his lawn mower on April 11, and has undergone seven surgeries as a result. But June 17 brought a new hope to Ireland and her family as she was fitted for a pair of prosthetic legs at Prosthetic and Orthotic Associates in Orlando, walking for the first time since the accident.

Ireland Nugent Walks Again

It took five hours for Ireland’s prosthetic legs to be fitted just right, but almost immediately after the final adjustment in the fitting process on June 17, Ireland walked again for the first time in more than two months.

The Tampa Bay Times reported that Ireland was a little fussy at the beginning of the appointment, and the experts helping with the fitting were worried she might no be willing to walk on her prosthetics. Once she was completely fitted though, Ireland looked happier than ever in an adorable cream and pink floral dress, and thrilled about her new legs.

The legs she was fitted for on June 17 were just test limbs to get measurements for her actual prosthetics. But when the prosthetist said he was going to need the test limbs back, Ireland couldn’t seem to part with them. She told the prosthetists, “I want to keep my legs.”

Jerry Nugent: ‘She’s My Superhero’

Because of her excitement for her new legs, Ireland was able to take the Dora the Explorer sticker-covered prosthetics — and another test pair with Minnie Mouse on them — to practice with in her hotel room while she awaits her finished legs.

As hard as it may be to have to relive the day of the accident every time he looks at his daughter, Jerry Nugent, Ireland’s father, is amazed by the way she has handled the tough process she has gone through since the accident. He told the Tampa Bay Times:

I’m just speechless and so proud. She took it over the top. … She’s not ever going to hold back. That’s my superhero. That’s my angel.

What do YOU think about Ireland’s perserverance, HollyMoms?

In fact, exactly a decade ago, at the 1999 Malaysian Grand Prix, Schumacher and the then championship contender Eddie Irvine were stripped from their 1-2 standings as race stewards had declared the Ferraris had used illegal bargeboards. Bargeboards were among some of the aerodynamic aids that were used till last year. Post-race scrutiny resulted in the stewards discovering some portion of the bargeboards (in millimeters) was missing because of which both the drivers were disqualified. That was the inaugural Malaysian Grand Prix and the decision had an enormous bearing as disqualification would have meant the end of title hopes for Ferrari and Eddie Irvine. That’s right, the Irishman (and not Michael Schumacher) was leading Ferrari’s charge against McLaren’s Mika Hakkinen.

“Be patient,” Thoerner said. “We’ll work to get better and hopefully be able to bring lots more tornado shelters to our area.”

Afghanistan is a good example. The “surge”, which preoccupied the White House when Obama first took office in 2009, led to an extra 33,000 soldiers being sent to Afghanistan, where they wholly failed to eliminate the Taliban. The remaining 112,000 Nato troops will be withdrawn by the end of 2014, bringing to an end one of the more disastrously unproductive wars in American history. The US and its allies are supposedly training up Afghan security forces to take their place, but so many American and British soldiers have been killed by Afghan soldiers and police that the transition is turning into a debacle.

On Thursday he stepped back from that post, announcing the appointment of Tesco veteran Chris Bush as UK managing director. “With the UK plan under way it’s right for me to step back a little from day-to-day management of the UK business,” he said.
