Lauryn Hill Jail-Bound — Failed To Pay Taxes
U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo in Newark, N.J. federal court didn’t stop there! She also sentenced Lauryn, 37, to three months of home confinement with electronic monitoring after the prison term. She’ll also serve a year of supervised release and pay a $60,000 fine in addition to paying her tax debt to the IRS.
Wow, it’s certainly worth paying your taxes!
“I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them,” Lauryn said before Madeline Cox Arleo. “I had an economic system imposed on me.”
Why Lauryn Failed To Pay Her Taxes
Lauryn started singing with the Fugees in the 1990s before releasing her multiplatinum album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998. She plead guilty last year to failing to pay taxes on more than $1.8 million in earnings from 2005 to 2007. The May 6 sentencing also took into account unpaid earnings from 2008 and 2009, bringing the grand total to $2.3 million.
Lauryn said that she failed to pay taxes during a period she’d dropped out of the music business to protect herself and her children.
“There were veiled threats, there was blacklisting,” she said. “I was told, `That’s how it goes, it comes with the territory.’ I came to be perceived as a cash cow and not a person. When people capitalize on a persona, they forget there is a person in there.”
Lauryn is to report to prison by July 8. It’s not yet known where the East Orange, N.J. resident will serve her sentence.
