After serving nearly two years in jail, the ‘Always On Time’ rapper is now a free man!
Ja Rule, whose real name is Jeffery Atkins, was released early from prison on May 7 after serving a sentence for attempted illegal gun possession and tax evasion.
Ja Rule Released From Prison
Around 10 a.m., the 37-year-old rapper’s wife picked him up from Ray Brook Federal Prison in New York, TMZ reports. After being released, Ja Rule went straight home where he will be held on house arrest until July 28. The rapper’s original release date was set for July, but he was let out early.
Ja Rule Charged With Gun Possession
In 2007, police discovered a loaded semi-automatic handgun in the rapper’s sports car in NYC after the rapper attended a Lil Wayne & Friends concert. Lil Wayne and Don Rhys were also arrested in the incident, but only served eight months for attempted possession of a weapon.
Ja Rule pled guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon on Dec. 13, 2010 at the Manhattan Supreme Court. The rapper received a two-year sentence for his crime.
Ja Rule Charged With Tax Evasion
In July 2011, Ja Rule ran into trouble with the law again when he was charged with not paying taxes on over $3 million in earnings from 2004 to 2006. He was sentenced to 28 months in prison for tax evasion.
The rapper served his gun possession sentence and tax evasion sentence simultaneously.
