‘The Following’: Emma’s Death — Will Joe Carroll Care?

ICYMI, Emma was killed on the April 21 episode in an attempt to take out Claire (Natalie Zea), Joe’s one and only love. Ironically, it was the only mother figure that she ever had who took her out.

“Claire was the closest thing to a family that she had,” Valorie told HollywoodLife.com exclusively. “This was the most normal her life ever was –those couple of years when she was pretending to be Denise. So for her mother to be the one to take her out, it was a little ironic [and] there was definitely a sense of betrayal there.”

So, after Joe told Emma through [fake] tears that she would always be the woman behind the man, how will he react to her shocking death? Well, that’s still up in the air — but we will find out what those feelings are that he’s been hiding.

“It’s going to answer everyone’s question as to whether or not Joe cared about her, because people ask that a lot. Obviously he doesn’t love her the way that he loves Claire; she’s something else,” Valorie explained. “He had such a strong reaction to Mandy (Tiffany Boone)’s death, so how he responds to the news will be very telling.”

Will Anyone Care That Emma’s Gone ?

With the way that last week ended — Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore)’s fate being held in Joe’s hands and Ryan (Kevin Bacon) lurking in the shadows — we’re never sure how Joe’s going to react to anything, or anyone else for that matter.

“There is one person in the world of The Following who mourns Emma’s death,” she revealed, but stayed tight-lipped on who that person was. However, Valorie did admit that even though she didn’t want to leave the “family” on set, she felt Emma on the other hand, was ready to go.

“When I read it, I was like, ‘She wants to die. She is ready and it was time.’ I’ve sort of talked a lot about the fact that she was so miserable without Joe and then when she got what she thought she wanted, he came back, it kind of went from bad to worse,” Valorie said, continuing that Emma was no longer “blinded” by her love for Joe anymore but could actually see the killer he was.

“In a lot of ways, [her death] mirrored Jacob (Nico Tortorella)’s death in season one, and from my perspective as an actor and as a character, she was doing the merciful thing killing him because he was in that sort of unsustainable state as well. He had no where to go and she kind of responded with, ‘Well I brought you into this world, I’ll kick you out of it mercifully’ — as opposed to the way that he would die by the cult or the cops, and she is sort of in the same place.”

What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Do you think Joe will be heartbroken by Emma’s death? Or will he be relieved? Let us know!
