The firefight began after the brothers robbed a convenience store and hijacked a vehicle in Cambridge. CNN reported that the two suspects shot at officers from the stolen car and also threw explosives at the officers during the chase. Officials responded by firing back, which unfortunately ended with the tragic death of one of their own. The MIT officer who was killed has been identified as 26-year-old Sean Collier.
Massachusetts State Police Spokesman David Procopio told CNN, “Investigators recovered a significant amount of homemade explosives from the scene of the shootout.” Tamerlan, who was killed in the shootout, was reportedly wearing explosives and a triggering device.
19-year-old Dzhokhar was able to escape authorities and is currently on the run. He is the target of a major manhunt based in Watertown, and is suspected to be armed and very dangerous. Boston and the surrounding areas are on lockdown until further notice.
