It’s been six years since a girl won ‘American Idol’ and I think it’s Angie’s time to shine! With a heartfelt tribute to her hometown of Boston and her beautiful rendition of a Beyonce classic, she is in it to win it!
The top five girls sang two songs each — one from their birth year and one from a diva. Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson judged throughout but it’s up to YOU to determine the top four! Do you agree that Angie stole the show tonight? Keep reading for the full recap of the April 17 show.
The Top Five Sing Songs From The Year They Were Born
Candice Glover was born in 1989. She put her own twist on “Straight Up” by Paula Abdul. “It’s so effortless for you. You set the bar high for all the other girls,” Keith said. “Unpredictable. Smart. Song choice — genius!” Mariah commented.
Janelle Arthur was born in 1989. She sang Vince Gill’s “When I Call Your Name” and played her guitar. Nicki said: “I thought your vocals sounded so pretty and angelic. Congratulations.” Randy said she was super comfortable on stage. “I believed you,” Mariah said. Keith didn’t connect with it.
Kree Harrison was born in 1990. She sang “She Talks To Angels” by The Black Crowes. “Your voice is so fine and beautiful,” Keith said. “That was the best performance of the night, by far,” Nicki said. Then she called Mariah “sir.” Mmmkay.
Angie Miller was born in 1994. Angie sang “I’ll Stand By You” by the Pretenders. She dedicated the song to “her home — Boston.” Randy, Keith and Mariah gave her a standing ovation. “That was a beautiful dedication,” Mariah said. “I love you at the piano. That was a great song choice,” Keith said. “This is some of the best top five [singers] we’ve ever had,” Randy said.
Amber Holcolm was born in 1994. She sang Mariah Carey’s cover of “Without You.” “It was beautiful baby, I loved it,” Keith said. Nicki said she didn’t feel connected to the song and she didn’t like it. “I give you mad props because I don’t know if anyone could have done this in front of the legend [Mariah],” Randy said.
They Contestants Sing Songs By Divas
Candice sang Mariah and Whitney Houston‘s “When You Believe.” “That is how you do a Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston song. There’s a bigger message here. For women, for everyone, for Boston. Everyone needs to feel that right now,” Nicki said. Randy said it was the best vocal of the night! Mariah said she was so proud of her.
Janelle sang Dolly Parton‘s “Dumb Blonde.” Randy said: “I thought it was a fun performance number for you but not so much vocally.” Nicki said: “You need to know you are great. I think you’re in jeopardy of going home tomorrow. But you’re very, very lovable.”
Kree sang Celine Dion‘s “Have You Ever Been In Love.” She got a standing ovation from all four judges. “It shows your versatility ” Mariah said. Keith said she had incredible control. “You are not country, you are worldly,” Nicki said.
Angie sang “Halo” by Beyonce and got a standing ovation from all four judges. “Definitely top three,” Keith said. “You just did that song justice like a Queen should,” Nicki said. Randy said she is in it to win it!
Amber sang Barbra Streisand‘s “What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life.” “I don’t think you get the credit you deserve,” Nicki said. Randy said she does not belong in the bottom. “Classic. Beautiful. Elegant,” Mariah said.
