John Mayer and Katy Perry‘s relationship seemed to be going so well, which is why a new report from Us Weekly is all the more distressing. The two, who’ve been dating since summer 2012, have split up for the second time in their courtship!

John Mayer & Katy Perry Split — For Good?

The magazine reported confirmation of the split from multiple sources. “It’s sad,” one source tells the publication, but adds that this might not be a permanent split. “It’s not over until it’s over. You have to see how things play out.”

A source close to the couple confirmed to HollywoodLife.com that it is “more of a break than a break-up.” Our insider added, “You’ll probably see them hanging out sooner then later and hooking up again. They remain very friendly.”

This isn’t the first time that John, 35, and Katy, 28, have taken a break from one another. They briefly split in August of 2012 before getting back together the next month.

John & Katy’s Busy Career Schedules

Another source tells the magazine that Katy isn’t ready to be done for good, adding that the busyness of their careers at the current moment is a factor in the split. “She’s leaving the window open. They have both been so focused on work.”

Us reports that Katy has been busy in the studio in Los Angeles, working on her third album, while John, who has been recuperating from some intense vocal issues and throat surgery last year, is preparing for an upcoming tour and a live Google Hangout chat scheduled to take place on Mar. 21.

John Mayer & Katy Perry’s Relationship In Happier Times

After reconciling for the first time in September, the couple seemed to be growing more serious. They attended several A-list events together as a couple, and John even gushed about Katy during an interview with 60 Minutes in January. Things seemed good between the two as recent as Mar. 2, when Katy tweeted, “My boyfriend is taking me to a kitten shelter in his truck.” How could things have fallen apart so quickly?
