A little girl was brutally attacked by a pit bull in New York City on Mar. 10, rescued only by strangers, while the dog’s owner defended the animal! Read on for the shocking details.

The corner of 166th Street and Webster Avenue in the Bronx was the site of a horrific scene on Mar. 10 when a six-year-old girl was attacked by a unleashed and vicious pit bull as the girl and her grandmother were walking down the street. As passersby rushed to rescue the young girl, the dog’s owner rushed to defend his pet!

Strangers Rush To Rescue Young Girl During Pit Bull Attack

As surveillance footage of the brutal attack shows, the dog bolted straight for the little girl from across the street, attacking her and flinging her around the sidewalk. Her poor grandmother seems mostly stunned and terrified, unable to do anything to help. Several witnesses rushed to the child’s aid, including Eduardo Candelier, who works at a nearby tire shop.

“The dog was biting her,” Eduardo told the local NBC affiliate. “The girl was crying, she was going crazy.” He added, “The first thing that went through my mind was that I had to help her.”

The little girl was rushed from the scene in an ambulance to a local hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries, including small puncture wounds to her right arm and right leg. She was treated and released and, thankfully, is said to be doing well.

Vicious Pit Bull’s Owner Defends His Dog During Attack

During the frightening ordeal, the owner of the dog rushed to the scene, though he reportedly seemed more preoccupied with keeping people away from his dog. He puts the animal on a leash, as it should have been all along, and tells the others to stand back.

The owner, who lives near the corner, stayed on the scene to await the arrival of the police. He was issued a summons for having the dog off of a leash, but the dog was not taken away by animal control.

Do you think the dog should have been taken away, HollyMoms?

Wow! The nerve of some people saying the dog should not be put down for this is plain ignorant!!!! You people need to wake up and realize this was a LITTLE GIRL not another animal. Pit bull needs to be banned! That’s why I love the site on Facebook. ” protect children from pit bull ” there is no reason in the world this dog should still be living . My nephew was just bit by a neighbors pit and it took us getting a judge to finally understand the dog needed to be put down ! This is so sad how you idiots put this dog before that lil girl.

Small creatures are small creatures to a pit. They do not differentiate. Do not make eye contact. Back slowly away and in a wavy line. Keep your small creatures out of their sight, cats, little dogs, little people, children and babies.

If a pit bull owner could go through the horror and helpless feeling that one goes through while being attack by one of these demons and has to live with it the rest of their life, they would also be anti pit bull. This breed needs to be exterminated!

Of course it should be taken away. Behavior like that is not acceptable. A dog attacking another dog is one thing and can have lots of reasons. But any dog attacking a child like that, completely unmotivated, with its retard owner not having it in a leash nor being able to control it, should be taken away – not all kinds of warnings and other bs first.

As a pit bull owner, we all need to be aware of the responsibility of owning this breed. This owner should know his animals temprament and kept the dog away from children and on a leash. Having not done this he should loose the right to own a dog of any type. The owner should also face restitution and be fined.

I want to start with the fact that I love pit bulls, however, ALL dogs should be kept on leashes. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a pit bull or a poodle, ANY dog can attack someone and it’s the owners responsibility to teach it not to. If a dog is going to run across a street to attack a little girl who’s to say it won’t do it again? I understand wanting to stand up for your dog, but if your dog is hurting an innocent child (or anyone for that matter) you need to know when enough is enough. That poor little girl is going to be terrified of dogs for the rest of her life because of this.

Hmmm this news made it to Denmark And Sweden, it seems to me that its the same story around the world. I have worked with dogs in Australia, grew up with dogs also. There is allways storys to be told in the news, but sadly, many of them al true, giving the wrong combination of dog breeds vs different people types gives a bad result. hopefully the laws against “Muscle dogs” as it is called over here, will be tightened even more. yes, there are people who are better to control these kind of dogs, but why take the risk? these kind of dogs are harder to control. I hope that this dog is put down, dogs with this behavior can not be trusted. Poor child and mom, hope that they are doing better.

Of course it should be put down. Immediately! That dog made a beeline for a six year old girl and took her down like a lion with a gazelle! There is no ‘more to the story’! Any dog that will go after a child like this should be destroyed. And if your first instinct in reading this story is to defend pit bulls and not show concern for this innocent child, then I pray you never have children.

Any human being who defends the rights of this dog over the little six year old girl is part of the problem in our society. The owner walks away as if nothing happened. As if he didn’t aid in altering the life of a child forever. She will have scars both physical and mental for the rest of her life. This dog should have been put down. The owner should have been more responsible, keeping the dog on a leash, and my bet is that he knew this dog was an accident waiting to happen, so before taking it out into the public the dog should have also had a muzzle on to prevent or lower the risk of something like this happening. A pit bull can be as deadly as a gun, with a slow, more tourtourous death ensuging. A animal is an anmimal. They are part wild. You can never really know what is in the mind of a pit bull. They are strong, and can break the jaws of other dogs in a simple game of pulling a toy out of their mouths. If they can kill another dog, the same size, but with a different jaw structure, think of what they could do to a child. The person that said there had to be more to the story, come on, are you for real? What more can there be, the dog probably saw the little girl’s coat flapping in the wind and it attracted it, and he darted across the street and attacked with the intent to kill…to hunt. The owner of that animal should have run like hell to grab the dog before this happened. A mere call of the dogs name would not have stopped it, it’s mind was set on a target. There is no defending a pit bull, this bread and other’s like it really have no place on city streets. God Bless the little Girl and God Bless the people that came to her aid.

#1 we dont know the whole story. #2 not all pitbulls are dangerous. There are many of these situations every year, and the shocking report is pitbulls are not on the top of the list! Dont give pitbulls a bad rep, as there are many other breeds that are far worse…You just never hear about them. But like I said, The story is very vague and theres more to it, Im sure.

Also there is NO dog that sends more people to morgues and trauma units more then the pit bull does. Who cares that a chihuhaha statistically bites more? What does that prove? When they start ripping scalps of children and requiring people to kill them or nearly kill them to get them to release their grip then we will talk about chis but your argument is invalid

Of course not all PitBulls are dangerous BUT they ARE the leading killers and savagers of humans and other animals, both companion and livestock. AND the owners are the most irresponsible of all owners, 99% of them never ever pay a penny for restitution for the damages that their CHOICE of dog causes. No one forces anyone to CHOOSE a pitBull and when there are 1000s of perfectly safer dogs that are murdered every day for the simple reason that there are not enough homes due to irresponsible people who breed as well as those who get a dog without thinking that action through carefully. When the PitBull/PB mix owners CHOOSE a dog with a genetic predisposition to attack without warning and fail to pay for the consequences and force the victim to be RE-VICTIMIZED by the medical/veterinary bills and THEY are forced to bankruptcy, then the medical /veterinary providers are forced to make up those costs by adding them to the bills that YOU and I pay. Thus, these owners of these aggressive dogs, dogs who attack as seen WITHOUt WARNING (in the breeding) actually steal from ALL of us. They are the true SOCIOPATHS of society who choose a dog that matches their self-centered and irresponsible personalities.

In 2009 there were 32 dog mauling fatalities in the United States.  Of this total 14 were due to pit bulls, 44%

In 2010 there were 33 dog mauling fatalities in the United States.  Of this total 22 were due to pit bulls, 67%

In 2011 there were 31 dog mauling fatalities in the United States.  Of this total 22 were due to pit bulls, 77%

In 2012 there were 38 dog mauling fatalities in the United States. Of this total 23 were due to pit bulls, 61%

In 2013 from January 1st to March 6th  there have been six fatal dog maulings in the United States.   Of this total 6 were due to pit bulls, 100%

Ever since records have been kept (1896) PitBulls and their interbred mixes have accounted for 100% of the hospitalizations for dog bite over 3 days (severe bites).

The only thing that these PitBull apologists do is to whine that they are being discriminated against. They refuse to accept any modification in their behaviours or attitudes nor do they bring any possible solutions to the discussion. They are pretty much like that owner in the video… this IS the typical PB owner.

Don’t know the “whole story”? The “whole story” is recorded on video!!!!! “…many other breeds that are far worse”?! Name one! Every serious dog attack in the US is reported. In fact, last year, the retriever-mix that killed the baby in South Carolina and the big, ugly mastiff that murdered the child in Nevada received a LOT more coverage than any of the 24 murders-by-pit bull. In recent years, pit bull-type dogs have been responsible for 65 to 70% of the deaths-by-dog in the US every year and 100% of the dismemberments and scalpings. A freaking lion wouldn’t be “worse” because lions kill only for food or out of fear! Want to see what a sweet, loving, wouldn’t-hurt-a-fly “pittie” can do to a child in less than five minutes? Google “Amaya Hess.”

I have seen docile pit bulls but unfortunately this breed of dog is raised by cowards for the wrong reasons. In Ontario, Canada there is a grandfather law now prohibiting the sale and breeding of pit bulls.

There are hundreds of other dog attacks that do not involve a pitbull but you never hear of them! Why not? Most people are ignorant to the pitbull breed. Any breed of dog can be mean but in the case of pits it is all on the owner. If it is raised to be mean it will be if not it won’t. I have always had pits and have never had any trouble. I now have one in my home and my nephew plays with him every day! my poodle will bite you before my pit will.

Well there are 800k reported dog bites a year in the US.. many times that are not reported.. dog bites should be prevented but a pit mauling is a whole other form of evil. I would rather have your poodle bite me 100 times then be mauled by a pitbull once. Plus if you raise a poodle properly (which obviously you are not) they shouldn’t be vicious. Even though poodles were once considered fighting dogs they are nothing like a pitbull.

To nicki: Every serious dog attack in the US is reported. Last year, the husky that killed the child in Pennsylvania, the retriever-mix that killed the baby in South Carolina, and the mastiff that killed the child in Nevada received a LOT more press than any of the 24 murders-by-pit bull. The only people “ignorant to [sic] the pit bull breed” are pit bull owners! And FYI, “pit bull” is not a “breed,” but rather a “type” of dog! You say your “poodle will bite you before my pit,” how many people were killed by poodles last year?

Fully agree and love pits. However, when a poodle bites, it let goes… when a pit bites, it hangs on. Any animal can snap, it just depends on who can cause more damage. Its like getting hit by a bike or a car… So, with all the love for pits (and other muscle dogs), I would always supervise. You do seem like a responsible owner and fish you best and a healthy dog. This was a horrible accident, no doubt, but owners can prevent such from happening.

It’s obvious that bad pet owners are also to blame, but we can’t ignore the fact that these animal’s ferocity is what draws them to the criminally insane owners in the first place.
How many people state they love their dogs more than people, maybe we are shorting humanity. The story is more complicated than “are pit bulls safe”. The topic actually should state, “Is owning pit bulls more important than a human life?” NO!
Provoked, unprovoked the outcome is the same. Human beings were gifted with free will, dogs were not, and therefore humans have a responsibility. It is never easy to label a problem, and then address the problem with intellect. We all have our own views on how to prevent tragedies like this one from happening, as a victim of a horrific pit bull attack it is easy guess mine.

S.v.k. this bred was not initially bred to hunt althought they can sometimes be used as hog dogs. As far as teaching them mine has learned as fast as any other breed oj have owned.. i didn’t teach him to bring back the ball tho.. he just does that on his own… No pit bulls do not have locking jaws please educate yourself on the breed before you blab. This dog should’ve been on a leash and should’ve been taken away from the owner tho. Best wish and luck to the little girl. I onky hope she is not traumatised for the rest if her life from dogs. Educate yourself! You pit bull advocates always tell people this but you only want them to see pro pit bull fluff sites. Pit bulls were bred for one thing and one thing only – BRUTALITY! Dog fighting, They was never no nanny dogs and no one ever said pit bulls have a physical feature that makes them lock on to their victims, they just do it. Otherwise it wouldnt take for them nearly being killed or being killed to release their grip. You are a sick person coming to the defense of these mutants after the baby killing rampage they have been on already this year. Pit bulls and fighting dogs with similar pedigrees should be restricted just like owning a lion or hyena. Are all pit bulls bad? No but it is a roll of the dice. I know first hand it does not matter how they are raised, it is in their genetics. They are NOT a ball of clay or a blank slate as you advocates often repeat, they are genetically wired after hundreds of years of selective breeding for violence. They have no other use. And to think people actually voted the dog not be taken away, it should have been shot by the police on sight.

I think the real person that needs to be educated is yourself. Pit bulls were ORIGINALLY called the nanny dogs because they were so good with children there are multiple studies showing this. If it were the breed and not the environment that the dog was raised in then they would score lower on the breed temperature test, they score better than over half of “family” dogs. The owner is at fault for not having his dog on a least, ALL dogs have to be walked on a leash. I have seen plenty of family households with a pit bull so people trying to say that pit bull owners only get this breed because it fits our lifestyle is a crock! What lifestyle is that? I’m a full time student and worker and I own a pit bull. I’m pretty sure that’s not the lifestyle you’re talking about. ANY dog can attack, don’t try and blame it on the breed. That’s what I call ignorance.

The dog shouldn’t be put down, but should be taken away from the owner. He should be fined and not allowed to own that type of dog or dogs period. For all you know he could use the dog for dog fighting. Saying the dog should be put down is like saying “This person killed once and will kill again. Give them the death penalty!” Just because a pit bull is a hunting breed doesn’t mean they’re a risk to society, you just have to train them right and they are sweethearts. It not dogs fault it’s their owners!

This breed is a hunting dog ,it has been breed for the kill. Now yes getting it as a puppy and lots of love is still a risk as they get older, they have a jaw that locks when it bits down and it is not the smartest of dogs,If you have ever tried to teach them to retrieve a ball ,good luck. It is not a dog to raise children around. The dog should be put down,he will do it again. Of all the breeds, if you move into a rental and have a pit bull you have to get dog insurance it is a law in California especially Pit Bulls. The little girl is very lucky.
