Kim Kardashian, 32 was on her way back from Paris Fashion Week to LA on March 5, which is nearly an 11-hour flight. On the flight she started experiencing flu-like symptoms, which gave the anxiety-ridden reality star a major cause for concern — and she was worried she was going to lose the baby.
Sources told Page Six Kim was afraid she could be suffering from a miscarriage, and ran right to her doctor’s office as soon as she landed in Los Angeles. Luckily everything turned out fine for mom and baby, but doctors warned her to get some rest.
Experts revealed to HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY why Kim’s sick symptoms could be cause for concern.
How The Flu Could Affect Pregnancy
According to Dr. Tara Solomon, OB-GYN Medical Director of The Women’s Wellness Center of South Florida, the flu isn’t necessarily a problem for a pregnant woman unless it turns into the pneumonia.
“The flu isn’t dangerous in pregnancy unless she develops an pneumonia,” Dr. Solomon tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “The flu is a respiratory infection, and the body will fight it off. There is low immunity during pregnancy so the flu can turn into pneumonia. This would be a problem because fluid would get into the lungs and cut off oxygen to the baby.”
So is it possible that traveling caused her to get flu-like symptoms? Possibly!
“Being around people and breathing in circulated air [like in an airplane] is possible that she caught it from somebody. She is always out and shaking people’s hands, and it’s so much easier to get sick when pregnant. It’s also a flu season and I think there is a flu pandemic,” Dr. Solomon adds.
Dr. Linda Burke-Galloway, board-certified OB-GYN and author, also talked about how a woman’s pregnant body can be affected by the flu.
“Symptoms of the flu are developed from a virus,” Dr. Burke-Galloway says. “The white cells are trying to fight the infection. All the systems are trying to fight an infection and are kicking into high gear. The baby is then at risk because the body is in a state of emergency. When the body is in a state of emergency the uterus becomes irritated and it starts to squeeze. When the uterus squeezes then it opens up and she could lose the baby.” Scary!
How Kim Can Prevent Getting An Pneumonia
Dr. Solomon recommended taking a lot of Vitamin C, and if the flu symptoms are really bad, she should take Tamiflu. She also needs to stay hydrated and drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Luckily, Kim’s doctors recommended she get a lot of rest, which the reality star is currently doing.
Miscarriages Around Five Months Can Be A Sign
Although miscarriages are most common in the first trimester, Kim is still at risk in her second trimester is in her second trimester — and Dr. Burke-Galloway explains why.
“At 20 weeks, you don’t call it a miscarriage you call it a fetal demise. At 20 weeks you have to think about how weak or strong her cervix is. In your 20th week (second trimester), pregnancy losses could indicate that the patient has a history of preterm labor. It could also be a weak or incompetent cervix. If she gets pregnant again she would need a cerelage around 13 weeks,” she says.
