Crystal Kelly refused to abort an unborn baby she was carrying for a couple once the ultrasound revealed a series of disabilities. The surrogate fled to Michigan where she was legally acknowledged as the mother to save the baby’s life.

Crystal Kelly, 29, was paid $22,000 to have a baby for a Connecticut couple, but was horrified when the baby girl’s parents instructed Crystal to get an abortion after disabilities in the child were revealed in the ultrasound. The biological parents to offered Crystal $10,000 to abort the baby. She asked for $15,000, but the parents refused.

The baby’s parents aggressively requested custody of the child with intentions of placing her in foster care. After an on-going legal battle with the parents, Crystal flew to Michigan to give birth to the child according to CNN, thus leaving the child to be fostered, rather than being raised by herself or the originally intended parents.

The couple, who desperately desired a fourth child, provided the surrogate with an embryo they had left over from a previous round of in-vitro fertilization. The process began on Oct. 8 2011, and Crystal became pregnant only 10 days later.

The Disability Debacle

The biological mother kept closely in touch with Crystal and called her daily to check on her morning sickness. She gave Christmas gifts to Crystal and her two daughters and even paid off the monthly surrogate fee ahead of time since Crystal was currently faced with financial issues.

“I want you to come to us with anything because you’re going to be part of our lives forever,” said Kelley to CNN. Things began to change in February when the ultrasound test showed that the baby’s development was not going as smoothly as it once did.

The ultrasound revealed that the baby had a cleft lip and palate, a cyst in her brain and a series of heart defects according to the Daily Mail. A spleen and stomach were undetectable. Doctors at Hartford Hospital said the baby needed a variety of surgeries after birth and had a 25 percent chance of living normally.

The parents requested pregnancy termination as they saw the baby’s medical problems as overwhelming for the infant. Nonetheless, Crystal is very religious and disagreed stating that “all efforts should be made to give the baby a chance.”

What do you think HollywoodLifers? Is Crystal a hero for saving the baby?

nope she is selfish. brang a disabled baby into the world that wont benefit the world at all, didn’t even decide to raise it. put it up for foster care so tax payers money can go to waste and also waste foster carers time. no she is definatly not a hero. and she even had the nerve to ask for 15,000 big ones? seriously….disabled babies should be aborted no one likes to see them!

You are obviously disabled yourself (check your spelling I hint you are learning disabled). So does that mean you should of been aborted because I shouldn’t have to try and decode what you mean. I don’t like trying to explain disabled children have feelings to and only and cold-hearted person would says something along the lines as to “disabled babies should be aborted no one likes to see them!”

She is not so religious that for 15,000 she would have aborted the baby, there’s no price on life…

This is a horrible article which neglects to mention many elements. The parents were already raising not 1, but 2 children with birth defects. The woman had a contract stipulating that she would abort if the baby had defects, which she agreed to. then, after Crystal had the baby, she gave the baby for adoption. After all, it’s not her problem right? She’s just a baby maker, doesn’t want to actually take responsibility and raise the child.

Horrible, horrible human being.

I have a grandchild who has CP, lung and heart defects, brain damage and many other problems but he was one that was saved by a real human nurse after his mom attempted an abortion. He was adopted by my daugher because he needed a home and someone to love him. He has brought joy to not only my life but to the life of anyone who knows him. If you think its alright to take a childs life just because he is not perfect I would like to say you are a disgusting piece of slime that has no business walking the earth, but instead i would like you to meet me grandson and then say that. If you are able to then you already know how i would respond.

This woman is very brave. She chose to keep the baby despite the fact that she may not be happy with the deformities.

I find it odd everyone is praising this women saying she was selfless.. Did you actually read this article she wanted $15000.00 to abort the baby and the Bio parents refused. SO she already got money to carry the baby, she didn’t get the amount she wanted to abort so she flees and after the baby’s birth gives it up for adoption. She has no responsibility to raise this child, she made out big time with this deal!! I’m sorry but she doesn’t look any better to me then the Bio parents.

That is what pro-choice is all about. Though she renegade on the agreement she decided to keep the baby and that is perfectly o k. Women should be given this kind of chance, to choose what they think is right for them.

Thank god for people like this woman. Finally standing up for what she believes in. Who gives anyone the right to take a persons life…and yes, a PERSON. Some of these comments make no sense..everyone should have the chance to live. Only God has the right to take that life from you. How could you not love your child. And no, abortion is not you thinking about your unborn child and whats best for them, it’s YOU selfishly thinking about yourself and what you want.

It’s not a person. At that stage, it’s still a parasite, unable to exist on its own, using the mothers body to survive. Please don’t walk around crying about how it’s a person. Why don’t you go and save the starving people in Africa, or even your own country. You’re pro birth. You don’t seem to care what happens after that.

Right on Ally. She allowed the baby to live. When a baby is to where they can detect problems its too late to make that decision. Everyone deserves a chance to live once they have life and that life has already begun.

My son has many serious heart defects and has suffered a stroke.. We were advised on numerous occasions to abort. He’s five now and he struggles but he’s alive and he’s changed my life and the life of all who know him. My question to parents who ‘want’ a child but aren’t willing to give their challenges with them is this… What if your ‘perfect’ healthy child is in a car accident and faces medical trouble post accident? Will you abandon them then too? This story breaks my heart and I thank God that the surrogate saved that babies life…

Thank you for your comment, you made me think about this long and hard and you have given me such clarity. You are 100% right! There is no difference between this babies ‘right’ to life and that of a childs ‘right’ to life who is disabled later on, post-womb. Only ‘time’ as we understand it separates the two situations. This applies equality to the morality of aborting healthy fetuses vs killing newborns. We frail humans say the first is right but the second is wrong. Its an oxymoron! We must remember that we are not God and we must stop thinking that we are clever enough to take on His role.

That makes absolutely no sense. You said everyone has a right to choose abortion but you also think a baby with a 25% chance of surviving has a right to live. I don’t get it.

the surrogate did everything for money. She agreed to be a surrogate because she’d be paid. As a surrogate she knew the hadn’t was not hers, she understood she wasn’t every going to keep it/raise it. This bullsh!t run to save the baby was not because of religion, or some righteous act to save a life, she did it to spite the parents for not paying her asking price to abort. If she was paid what she asked for there’d be one less child in the world and one single mom $15K richer.
She’s no savior, just a selfish woman who twisted her story in hopes of some money making notariety!!!

A surrogate can’t be forced to have an abortion, regardless of the agreement. it was the surrogacy agency’s job to make sure that the IP’s and the surro mom saw eye to eye on the specifics of termination. Even though Crystal agreed to terminate on the grounds of serious abnormalities, there were no specific mentions of the parameters that defined what was serious enough for her to agree to terminate. The agency failed to match the two parties . . . they are to blame for this debacle.

What a horribly biased and slanted article! This report here only gave a brief overview of all the physical defects the child has and neglected to mention that whoever is now the baby’s caretaker is going to have to pay upwards of several hundred thousand dollars for numerous surgeries with only a very limited chance of the baby surviving more than a few years. While I don’t agree with a lot of what the “biological” parents did, I can’t blame them for not wanting to put themselves and their other children through the incredible financial and emotional burden that attempting to keep the baby alive will entail.
And if Crystal was so “deeply religious” as she claims to be she should have never agreed to be a surrogate because in her contract she had agreed to have an abortion in the case of serious birth defects! If she was so against abortion why would she sign that?

Was it not their( the parents ) embryo? Do we not have the right to choose in this country? Last I knew…. We did. I may not agree with their choice …. But it is THEiR decision and the surrogate had no right to make that decision for them. She knew her rights when she agreed to be the surrogate…. Her job was to carry THEIR baby…. Not make this decision. Sometimes people have to make hard decisions that not everyone agrees with…. But that is a parents job. We don’t know all of the details(what all disabilities tha baby has, actual money offered to abort, etc) but it is all unimportant. It is a sad situation overall.

@ Tasha: I fully agree. As a pro-choicer, I support all choice and the parents have the right to abort. Crystal is merely a “womb-for-rent”. Her choices do not matter. Her beliefs do not matter. Why give a baby a life full of medical problems ? That is not “life” ,that is medical servatude.

Wow, this has got to be the most hypocritical pro-choice statement I’ve ever heard. Isn’t the big phrase pro-choicers use “My body, My choice”? Don’t you claim that a woman should be able to choose what to do with her own body? Don’t most pro-choicers say that it’s not even a baby? But now in this case it’s not a woman’s choice for her BODY, it’s the biological parents’ choice for their BABY! I guess “My body, MY choice” and the claim that it isn’t really a baby ironically backfires on the pro-choice movement this time.

That’s an amazing story. Crystal is a courages woman, her kids can be proud of her. I have no word for the parents, that obviously think that the baby is a pet not a human being. I hope they see their baby on TV and burn with shame.

okay, magda, but what about the report that crystal was fine and dandy with the abortion if she were paid a little bit more than was offered… i will kill the baby for 15, but not 10. (doesn’t actually ring true though- maybe that’s a lie.) i don’t know, i see both sides in this- but can’t quite wrap my brain around the woman being okay with an abortion if she was paid another 5000…

I agree. Shame on the surragate !! The parents want what is best, and clearly having a baby with a bunch of birth defects is not what they had in mind.
