The parents of Reeva Steenkamp, who was tragically shot and killed by her Olympian boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius, could barely contain themselves during their first television interview.
Reeva Steenkamp’s Parents Speak Out To Oscar Pistorius
Barry and June Steenkamp sat down for a dramatic interview with South African TV show Carte Blanche and bravely spoke on their 29-year-old daughter’s death and the man in question, Oscar.
On the same day that Barry told South African newspaper Beeld that Oscar is going to have to “live with his conscience” if he’s guilty, Barry also pleaded with his slain daughter’s boyfriend to “come out with the honest truth.”
The case is less than two weeks old, but has already been packed with odd twists and turns. It’s hard to imagine how rough the experience has been on Reeva’s close family, and their strong desire for clarity and closure is understandable. “It’s only Oscar and Reeva that know the true story,” Barry added in the interview.
June Steenkamp — How She Found Out About Her Daughter’s Death
The most shaking part of the TV appearance came when Reeva’s mother, June, revealed how she learned the tragic news about her daughter.
Fighting back tears, June told Carte Blanche that authorities first asked her if she had a daughter.
“I said, ‘Yes,’ and he said, ‘There’s been an accident, and she’s been shot.’ And I said, ‘All I want to know is if she’s alive or she’s dead.’ And he said, ‘I’m sorry to have to tell you, but she’s dead.’”
With a story as odd and intriguing as this one, it’s sometimes easy to forget the real people it affected, which is what makes it all so gut-wrenching.
