As for what made Dallas stand out to us, we could say Matthew’s great skills as an actor, or the character’s complexity, but let’s be honest — it was the thong.

And now Matthew has revealed to HollywoodLife.com exclusively how he picked it out!

Matthew McConaughey’s ‘Magic Mike’ Costume: A Whole Lotta Leather

“We found this sort of obsessed, but comedic route by a guy who was taking himself very seriously,” Matthew said of his character. Which led to the more important question — what kind of thong was this comedically serious guy going to wear?

“There were week-long talks about the right thong,” Matthew said. “I brought up Jim Morrison, and he [Christopher Peterson, Magic Mike costume designer] was like, ‘Leathers — leather pants.’ Once we found the leathers, and they fit, we were like, ‘That’s a stalemate. That is what Dallas has on all the time.'”

We agree that the leather outfit seemed stuck to (well, not exactly) Dallas in Magic Mike. The leather pants, the leather vest, the leather thong — they’re all so HIM!

Matthew McConaughey Wins At The Independent Spirit Awards

For his efforts, Matthew was awarded the Best Supporting Actor at the Independent Spirit Awards on Feb. 23. The man behind Dallas also told HollywoodLife.com why he loves independent films, and making unique movies like Magic Mike.

Because of the smaller budgets, Matthew said, “you’re forced to come together and make it happen. And there’s something that’s fun about the construction of making a movie. That’s my favorite thing, is the making of an independent film.”
